Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Anyone have experience at food and wine to know if there's enough non-dessert choices for vegetarians?

There are a few things. It's been a bit better the past two years (2012, 2013) because they introduced a new "Terra" booth that offered two vegetarian items made with Gardein products.

Here is my list from 2013. We tried nearly everything on this list. Our favorites were the two offerings at the Terra booth but also enjoyed the veggie haggis, the paneer pocket, griddled cheese, pretty much everything. The only things we did not enjoy were the tofu dish in Japan (tasteless and the veggies were way overcooked) and the mushroom bread in Poland, again just not very flavorful. We did not try the blue cheese souffle.

Food & Wine Festival 2013:

Africa: Spinach and paneer cheese pocket

Cheese Booth: Almond Crusted Blue Cheese Souffle with Fig Jam; Artisan cheese selection

Greece: Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey; Spanakopita;

Ireland: Kerrygold Cheese selection with bread and chutney

Japan: Youki tofu w/ miso sauce, edamame and grilled vegetables

Poland: Zapiekanki (toasted mushroom, onion and cheese bread w/ ketchup)

Scotland: Veggie Haggis

Terra: Trick'n Chick'n Curry; Chili Colorado

Thanks. Very helpful.
You're welcome. We were there for a week and spent a lot of time at Epcot so we ate some of these things twice since we had run out of options. I felt kind of envious that the carnivores had so many things to choose from, they could visit all week and never eat the same thing twice. On the bright side, the addition of the Terra booth has helped a lot. We're going again this year so I'm hoping the Terra booth will be back.

Have the chefs been able to accommodate vegans at Biergarten or Chefs de France?

My vegan sister has had good luck at both Biergarten and Chefs de France, Biergarten is one of her favorites actually. She calls the restaurant the week before, when she is seated the chef comes out to show her what she can eat on the buffet plus they also make her a separate dish (usually something with tofu which she requests when she calls).

Quick update for folks who might be interested: Chef TJ is moving from breakfast at 1900 PF to dinners. Had the pleasure of meeting him last week and he mentioned that this would be effective as of Sunday (yesterday).

Woo hoo! Thank you for letting us know. I really want to eat there when he's working. Have heard nothing but good things about him and how he accommodates vegans/vegetarians.

exactly what do you expect him to do at a buffet other than point out what you can eat?

I've heard he makes special dishes for vegans/vegetarians that aren't on the regular menu. :)

This.

We went for breakfast, which is obviously less vegan-friendly than dinner (I am vegetarian, but was dining with two vegans). I believe he told us that the only offerings on the buffet that were already vegan were the fruit, grits, and bagels.

He brought out vegan Mickey waffles, crispy fried tofu, tofu scramble, vegan tater tots with sauce, and vegetables in a sesame sauce. Can only imagine the creative dishes that he'll make for dinner!

I wonder if I should cancel my breakfast at 1900pf or keep it. For the longest time I was debating on ohana or 1900pf for breakfast. Now I'm confused again.

I knew this thread was around here somewhere, so happy to see it again!

We are planning our next WDW trip over Christmas and New Years, 2 weeks of WDW fun...and dining!:stir:

I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and we are wanting to eat at a few new places. I have a few quesitons:

1. What is the vegetarian dinner at the Spirit of Aloha show? I know it says to call ahead, just curious what the offerings may be or if you can arrange something that you like better.

2. We are thinking about the Garden Grill, is there anything there they offer vegetarians? Ive heard of some ppl say they just ate the kids mac and chz, mashed potatoes and bread. I can do that, but prefer a better meal for the price.

3. Any suggested restaurants that work great with vegetarians? I dont care for tofu, but will eat a little of it. I do like veggie burgers and fake chkn, also like pasta dishes.

4. Is there a thread anywhere for vegetarian dining pictures?

Thanks!

1. I ate there last summer, and I honestly don't remember what my meal was. They did prepare me something different for my main entree. I want to say it was basically stir fried veggies with possibly some tofu chunks in it. Obviously the food wasn't memorable.

2. The one time I ate at Garden Grill the kids mac&cheese and a couple of the sides are what I ate.

3. I personally really enjoy La Hacienda de San Angel. You need to ask for the vegetarian menu, which is different than the regular menu, but there are 3 or 4 different options. I've had both the cheese empanadas and the vegetable tacos (no tofu in either). Both are really good. Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch has a very tasty quinoa burger (at least I really like it). 50's Prime Time Cafe generally has 1 or 2 vegetarian options that use meat subs (last time I was there it was spaghetti with vegetarian "meatballs). I've never been overly impressed with the veggie food at 50's Prime Time, but I enjoy the atmosphere and the food is OK.

The only place I'd really say to stay away from as a vegetarian is the restaurant in China at Epcot. I was given a plate of slimy vegetables and that's the only option I had. I love vegetables, but these were just mushy and slimy and not appetizing at all.

Love this thread! We are a family of vegetarians, including my 5yo and 1yo DDs, and are going on our first trip with DDP this fall. Yay Free Dining!

I booked mostly buffets/family-style for our TS meals, so DD will have her choice of items and not be limited to a kids menu (and so we can feed the baby without having to share our meals). Here are my ADRs:

Rainforest Cafe dinner
Cinderella's Royal Table breakfast
Akershus breakfast
Hollywood & Vine lunch OR Mama Melrose lunch (still deciding between these)
Crystal Palace lunch
Boma dinner
O'hana breakfast

I have to plan out my CS choices. Some of the CS kids menus baffle me - like Tangerine Cafe. Great veg options for adults but the kids choices are chicken fingers or hamburger. I'm thinking of asking if we can get a kids portion of falafel - has anyone tried this/had luck with substitutions on CS kids meals in general?

I had a vegetarian meal at garden grill in December and it was great!
My husband is not vegetarian so he had the regular meal, the salad was provided to share, without bacon, and the corn bread and mashed potato were both vegetarian
For my entree I seem to remember it was a portobello mushroom served with polenta, veggies and a tomato sauce.
Everything was delicious!
My server double check for me that the fruit cobbler was vegetarian/no gelatine and the kitchen confirmed that it was veggie friendly
We are eating at the Spirit of Aloha show next week but I'm pretty certain that I read somewhere that there is some sort of vegetarian stir fry available - I shall report back!

Are you on the dining plan? When I was at POR in September they didn't have a child's CS chicken nugget option. I talked to many people and nobody would do it for me. So I was going to order the adult chicken nuggets and use the child credit myself. But I couldn't find anything vegan on the child's menu. I was later told by the cashier at the food court that a counter service credit isn't assigned as an adult meal or kids meal. So from that point on I ordered my son the adult chicken nuggets and it was fine.

Just got back so thought this would be helpful for any vegans.

Magic Kingdom - I have the ratatouille at Be Our Guest and a burrito from Tortuga Tavern, both were good. Gastons Tavern also had celery carrot sticks and hummus.

Epcot - Electric Umbrella - they didn't have anything so they made a salad with lemon and oil as dressing. It was a nice as a big bowl of lettuce can be.#

Also do not eat at Via Napoli - there was a golf ball sized blob of mozarella on my "vegan" pizza and they tried to tell me it was undercooked dough. They obviously aren't careful about allergies and we had to get a manager to rectify the situation. Avoid like the plague.

Hollywood Studios - Sci Fi Diner - Veg burger is not vegan but they have a vegan one to sub it with, sweet potato fries were vegan and they also made me a vanilla shake with soy milk.

Animal Kingdom - Tusker House - amazing food.

Downtown Disney - Rainforest Cafe- burger was vegan but also cold and rancid. Portobello Trattoria - Garlic spaghetti is vegan as is (and delicious). Bongos Cuban Cafe - amazing veggie platter which is super filling!

Art of Animation Resort - Pasta and Indian meal with sides can both be made vegan, they also have Babycakes cupcakes.

Pop Century Resort - had nachos - they had tons of toppings and were pretty good.

Also :offtopic: but I found plenty of snacks etc at Universal though my mind has drawn a blank on what they were. IOA had vegan kebabs. The Krusty Burger sadly isn't vegan.

Busch Gardens the food was terrible, I had to scrape cheese out of a wrap which was essentially a tin of watery kidney beans and lettuce. My mum had a veggie burger which was vegan and tasted awful. They have Divvies snacks though.

Just got back from my first WDW trip as a vegetarian and it went GREAT! I was worried for nothing.

Some highlights:

Epcot Flower & Garden booths: frushi! This was so good I went back like 6 times over the course of our trip. I literally took some in a to go container to eat on the drive to the airport. I've never made sushi but I'm planning to try making this at home soon. The caprese at the Italy booth was excellent. Really simple and fresh. The orange macaron at France was really good, but it was huge! It was so oversized and rich that I struggled to finish it, especially in the heat. The filling was ice cold which was really refreshing. Always love the mini iced tea in Morocco but I was hoping to see the mimosa they had for Food & Wine. I've never had a better one. The sweet potato cinnamon waffle topped with Dole Whip at the pineapple promenade booth was fifty kinds of amazing. If anyone has the recipe for the waffle I would be so grateful if you shared!

Boma, Jiko, and Sanaa all had lots of really great options. It was so nice to eat at a buffet where I could eat so many of the choices! We actually ended up doing two meals each at Boma and Sanaa, they were both so good. I've been inspired to start trying some African/Indian foods at home.

Tusker House breakfast buffet- lots of great options here. I was disappointed by the lilikoi juice this trip - it tasted really watered down. Hoping this was just a fluke because I usually love it. Also, our service was atrocious. We have TIW, if we didn't the waitress would have gotten a minimal tip from us. We were seated for about 15 minutes before we even saw her. My husband ordered a bottle of water and she never brought it until we were completely done eating and ready for our check. In the meantime she brought the table next to us coffee, cream, ketchup and about sixteen other things. She visited that table at least four or five times after taking our drink order. She would look over at us and go, oh right your water, I'll be right back with that... And then she would come back with something for the other table but still no water. I asked for coffee and a mimosa and those were both really late too - I was finishing up my food when they arrived (and still no water when she brought my drinks!!) Just bizarre. In hindsight we should have complained but I hate wasting park time.

Via Napoli - we love it here, never had anything but a great meal.

California Grill: lots of awesome choices. I had a goat cheese ravioli appetizer that was sinfully good. Even DH loved it and he doesn't usually do goat cheese. For dinner I did the vegetarian chef's choice (4 mini portions) and everything was excellent. There was also a gnocchi meal that was vegetarian that I would have loved to try.

Breakfast at Artist's Palette: lots of great veggie choices here! Probably four or five different things. We only did breakfast once but everything looked excellent.

Lowlights:

Liberty Tree Tavern - DH (who is not veg) and I shared the turkey dinner with no gravy. I had potatoes, green beans and stuffing. I'm not 100% sure that the stuffing was actually vegetarian - when we ordered, I asked about it and the waiter said that the stuffing that came with the meal was not, but that they had a vegetarian herb stuffing they could substitute. We asked them to do that, then midway through the meal he said something about how he just gave me regular stuffing bc the substitution is actually gluten free, not vegetarian. It was all extremely confusing and I couldn't get a clear answer from him and at that point I'd already eaten it. Next time I'd just get the quinoa burger, we weren't too hungry so we wanted to split a meal but it was more effort than it was worth.

Chefs de France: not really any options that appealed to me as I do not like their macaroni and cheese. I just got a cheese plate and a side salad. Both were decent but nothing special. I do really like their creme brûlée though!

Turf Club: Awful. We are done eating here. I had the vegetarian pasta which was my only option and it was straight-up terrible. Just a bowl of linguine with a bizarre mix of plain vegetables tossed in it. I ate like three bites and I'm still annoyed with myself that I didn't send it back... If there had been anything else on the menu for me I would have. My husband's chicken was awful too - stringy and gross.

I've heard he makes special dishes for vegans/vegetarians that aren't on the regular menu. :)

i don't know if he's still the dinner chef at 1900 park fare, but when we were there 3 year ago, he was the dinner chef there and we were lucky enough to be there on a night he was working!!!!!

as to what he does?
yes he takes you around the buffet and shows you everything there you can eat.
AND - he prepares an amazing 3 course meal specially for you.

..

My daughters really want to go to Hoop Dee Doo but my oldest doesn't eat meat. Will they do anything special for her, like a pizza or something. Shes only 9, so it doesn't have do by anything crazy.

TIA

Have it noted on the reservation that she is vegetarian. They will make her a meal of her own. Both my daughter and I have done this there.
