Just wanted to add that we got a fantastic restaurant tip from a local lady we met while dining at Sonya's. It's a bit out of the way but the seafood was awesome and the all-you-can-eat blue crab and nightly specials were out of this world. The place is called Ozzie's and it's in a little town called Grant about 20 minutes down US1. The night we were there they had 35 cent clams and oysters, I ate to my hearts content for less than $20.

Although the atmosphere was somewhat lacking Ozzie's food was head and shoulders above Captain Hiram's. I'll go to Capt Hiram's if I want great scenery and Ozzie's if I want great food. Definitely well worth the drive. Plus you can't beat a place with newspapers and wooden mallets on the tables, it's just begging you to crack some crabs.

Thanks for the tip! We'll be joined by friends on our next trip (possibly a large group) and was trying to think of some fun and inexpensive places to go with good food.

So, based on the number of PM's I've gotten since last night - lots of people are already wanting a 08 VB swap. I probably won't start to set up things until early March (in time for Spring Breakers). Until then, if you PM me, I'll keep a running list of everyone who has expressed interest and dates will be assigned in order of response. We had two silmultaneous swaps last year because of all the interest, so I am guessing we'll have two (or maybe three) this year as well. Last year's cost was around 13.00 - I'm guessing it will be in that range (10-15) again this year.

Thanks!

Thanks, Starbox! Just sent you a PM.

Do they cook those crabs with Old Bay? Coming from Maryland, I would be highly critical about how they were cooked! :thumbsup2

Indeed they do! They also offered a garlic version, Old Bay plus garlic powder I think. Their menu offered all kinds of combinations of different crabs. DH got the all-you-can-eat Maryland blue crabs (with Old Bay) and honest to god the plate they brought them out on looked like the bottom part of a huge plastic planter, my combo plate came out on what looked like a plastic turkey platter it was enormous and completely filled with seafood! After DH had eaten his fill he left behind 7 crabs and that was his first plate!

Our waitress said they had a guy in who was from Maryland and he ate 3 platters full!!:scared1: :scared1:

DH is not expereinced at pulling them apart so it took him a while but he thoroughly enjoyed his meal. Their clam chowder was also very good.

Just as a side note, Grant is the home of the "Grant Seafood Fest" every year on the last weekend of February. If Ozzie's is any indication of the quality of their seafood I'm betting this is quite the festival.

:rotfl: Picking crabs is an art up here! :thumbsup2 Now you make me want some!:goodvibes Their size & weight definitely determines how many you can eat tho! I like mine brought out a few at a time so they don't get too cold...and lots of hot melted butter & vingear...Yummmmmmm! I'll take crab over lobster any day!

Indeed... you (and Anal Annie) coming from Maryland, I would expect you to be the ultimate consumer or critric of crabing or crab eating... I just hope the people from my region (Shenandoah Valley of Virginia) will clean the water that we send down to you and help your crabs (and fish) thrive. :)

:rotfl: Okay, I will put this restaraunt on my list of places to eat when I go in August. Between myself and Anal Annie, we will see if it passes the Maryland Crab test!! :goodvibes

Wow we can't wait to try that restaurant!!! My DH's family is from Nova Scotia so he grew up with great sea food, where I grew up on captian highliners fish sticks!! Our DD's love fish and shellfish too.
THanks for the awesome posts everyone!

Ozzie's was great. We can't wait to go back there when we are in VB for Halloween. Galic crab is wonderful. :thumbsup2

Love Ozzies. Go there for the crab not the decor LOL. FYI if you are ever visiting the area in Feb, come experience some of the local flavor. The Town of Grant holds a Volunteer run Seafood Festival the last week of the month.

Has anyone been to Vero on New Years Eve? Do they have any special activities or events?:confused3

I think my poor brain needs a rest from trying to figure out a short spring break trip! Originally booked HH, but air fare seemed pretty high..so changed yesterday to VB! Instead of doing one longer trip this year, trying to split up and make it two shorter. ( our DDs will both be seniors next year one hs and one college, and dont want to miss too much school time)

We are only going for thus-mon stay. How crowded is the resort during April breaks? We've done the parks in years past durning April break, :scared1: will it be as bad at Vero?

It will be crowded and busy but OrchidIsland/WabassoBeach isn't known to be the SpringBreakCapital of the World.;) Shh don't let the secret out.;) Have only visited to meet, greet and eat. Have not stayed over during this time of year. Hopefully someone here can help you out. Enjoy your trip!:)

Probably has been mentioned before, but if anyone is looking for decent cheap Mexican food, try family run Ay Jalisco's at 1814 US Highway 1 in Sebastian. It's a favorite cheap stop here for lunch. Small place so if you are going with a group they request you call ahead( 772-388-2368 )Might not be the best but there are not many spots where you can get chips, salsa, taco, enchilada(or other choices),rice and beans for under $5. Ate there Monday while waiting out a rainstorm. Leaves you plenty of change for a Cerveza or Margarita pirate:

I swear I felt my blood pressure drop 20 points after perusing this thread. What a great place! Dh and I are heavily considering splitting our stay between AKV and VB next December. I find I need a holiday after my Disney holiday and ending it at Vero Beach is perfect! How are the bugs in December?

Oh, I'm so glad this thread came back to the top -- we love cheap Mexican food so we'll have to try Ay Jalisco's. Thanks for the tip!

Another VB fan here!!! I just booked a DCL cruise for 2009 that includes the new stop at Tortola. DH wants to do a week at VB (or at least 4 or 5 days) before we do the cruise. I don't think he will have to twist my arm too hard to talk me into it.:rotfl2:

Major VB fan here. The whole family loves it. The pictures have made me homesick. Time to pick up the phone and make a reservation. :thumbsup2

already booked our June 2008 stay we are excitedly bring my mom and dad with us this time--has anyone started a chair swap for this month yet????
