My DH is considering having a vascectomy, but is scared out of his mind. Can anyone post their (or their DH's) experiences to make him feel better about it.

Also, what type of procedure did you have. Are some better than others?

DH had it done shortly after DD16 was born. The doctor had him take 2 valium before he left home and then gave him something else when he got there (don't remember what since it was a long time ago). He did the procedure in his office. DH said there was nothing to it. In fact, he was so looped, he laughed through the whole procedure.

I think they gave my DH a valium when we got there. When they took him in the office (I got to watch :teeth: ), they numbed him. The doctor did the procedure: snip, snip and then I think he cauterized the ends. Sewed him back up. No lie, the whole thing was done in just under 10 minutes. He walked out of there, walked home, and was mildly sore for a few days. He did play some basketball in the driveway (the next day). He wasn't supposed to but did it anyway. He was back to work on Monday.

Having somebody "clipping" around the family jewels. Nothing anybody could tell me would make me feel better about it. Tell him to hit the valium before he goes like the previous poster.

Dh had it done in the dr's office. No medication ahead of time or anything. It was done on a Thursday afternoon and he went to work on Friday and played basketball with the neighbors Fri evening. No problems what so ever. Much easier on him than a tubal would have been on me (DD was 4 and we decided we didn't want anymore children).

Same thing here. I watched, it wasn't a big deal. I think having a filling put in would be more painful. DH is a big baby when it comes to stuff like this and he did fine. Get a bag of frozen peas to use afterwards to ice the area. It is pretty minor especially compared to having a tubal which runs about $5000 and the vas was about $400.

I didn't actually know DH when he had it done but he's told me that it was no big deal. They did it in the dr's office and it was over quickly and he was fine to go to work the following Monday.

good luck my DH would not do it
i had tubal ligation after ds20 months was born
he was a huge baby and was like no way no ones doing that to me

Was this like a primary care doctor's office or an urologist? How long did you have to wait for an appointment? Did your insurance cover it?

DH's was done by a urologist in his office. Our insurance covered it at 100% because it was out patient. He was able to get an appoinment fairly quickly-- in a matter of weeks not months.

DH saw what I went through while DD was born and afterwards  . I told him that if I can go through all of that to give him a child he can do this for me. I found information for him and after a while he was OK with it.

I had it done about 7yrs ago after last (& final) child was born.... :earsgirl:

Procedure was done in the doctor's office, I was given some valium to calm me and then they did local anesthetic. Whole process took maybe 15mins.

There was no pain during. But, after they tell you not to do anything strenous and to take it easy at least for a couple of days... They usually do these procedures on a Friday, so that you have the weekend to relax.

Tell your DH - there really isn't anything to it... And... You don't lose any of your manhood.... :smooth:

I've thought of having this operation also, but the last time I had a procedure in that area I had to wear a diaper and I couldn't walk for 18 months!

(Man, I love that joke!)

Two words - "Frozen Peas".

Get two bags of frozen peas or corn for your DH. After the operation, he keeps on in his lap, the other in the freezer. Switch them ever 30-60 minutes.

Other than the whole operation being rather surreal, it was pretty easy. I had mine on a Friday and was back to work on Monday.

Just remember - Frozen Peas

My husband had it done Oct 2004. He said it wasnt a big deal. He said the anticipation of it was the worst thing. He was sore for a couple of days, but that was it. He also had it done on a Friday as well. He used the frozen peas the first day, and sat in the Lazy boy that first day and watched tv. The 2nd day he moved around more, and by the 3rd day he was outside fixing his car.

DH said some guy at work had it done. He went back for his test and had a third tube or whatever it is they snip so they had to take care of that.

I think DH is considering this so I'd like to hear the stories, too.

There can be complications but there can be with any procedure.

Agreed! Alot easier for him to go through it, than for me to get a tubal. He whined for a little while when we started talking about it, but there was no way I was going back in for a tubal, when basically they go, snip snip, done! He tried to milk it for all that it was worth. But when I told him, you seen me give birth twice, Do ya think you're getting any sympathy here? :rotfl: He got the pic. Seriously, he said it was no big deal. A urologist performs it in the office. He took valium before we left the house. Had it done on a Friday, went to work Monday. Didn't even need pain pills. Just the frozen peas. DH's insurance paid for it also.

We decided that we didn't want any more children. In laws were hounding us mercilessly for another grandchild.
DH went to the urologist for what he thought was a consult and he called me from the office to tell me they were going to do it right then and make sure that was what we wanted. I honestly spent more time (and pain) having a root canal done.
We didn't tell the in laws until they were hounding us (AGAIN) for another baby and I blurted out DH had a vasectomy, no more kids.... over dinner at a restaurant. DH nearly had a stroke. Not because it was some big secret, but how I just blurted it out.

Had it done 13 years ago. No valium, just a local at the Dr. office. I went to a surgeon. He used the Chinese method (only one incision). Honestly, the worst part was the iching when ah....stuff started growing back :rotfl:

Did have to be careful around the kids for a few days. They were at that perfect level and one wrong move....ouch.

DH went to the doctor and was checked out and found everything in working order :teeth: . The doctor has scheduled his procedure for next monday and the doctor did not proscribe vallium.

His insurance company will pay for it (cheaper than insurance for kids) and he is adorably nervious.

I won't baby him too much.

punkin :rolleyes1
