So who is going to the games in 2010? DW and I are looking at trading out with DVC for a room at Whistler and taking the kids for the 2010 games or atleast a week of it anyhow I think it is something they should experiance atleast one time in their lives. For those from the area how long a drive is it from Whistler to GM place we plan on taking in a couple hockey games.

Hey.... great idea!

Hadn't thought of trading some of the DVC to stay there. Will have to mention that to dh. Something the kids definatly should see at least once in their lifetime!

We hope to go but it's hard to predict what'll happen four years from now. DH's best friends live in Vancouver so hopefully we'll have a place to stay. I think it would be so exciting to be a part of such a big event!

I so badly want to go in 2010! My sister is living outside Vancouver in the valley so maybe I could spend time with her inbetween commuting in for the games! Anyone know how to go about getting tickets for events. I heard alot of big corporations buy up bulk tickets. Did anyone notice how many emty seats there were at these olympics. I don't know why but I think it's too bad. If I start planning now hopefully I'll actually make it there in 2010!! Go CANADA!!

We are hoping to go as well, 4 years seems a long way off but it will go by as fast as a Winnipeg speedskater. :worship: :worship:

We really want to go also. I really doubt we will be able to use DVC though- I think the demand will just be way to high.

I thought about reserving something and was wondering how far in advance can you reserve a room?

I have an in for tickets my cousin lives in Vancouver and works for the federal government out there doing lord knows what so I get tickets from him. I called DVC and they said we shouldn't have much of a problem with a trade for then but we will have to wait and see. Another girl I work with her hubby's mom lived in Vancouver and is looking to rent out her apartment for 2 weeks so she can come to London to get away from the mobs of people that will flock there for the games.

We own a 2-bedroom/2 bath condo at Legends in Whistler. We will not be using it during the 2010 Olympics. This condo is in Whistler Creekside, which is the site of the games. We have a balcony view of the courtyard where the winner's circle will be, and we have a view of the Dave Murray ski hill, where the ski events are held.

We aren't sure what we're doing with the condo yet. Some owners are telling us that our units may be rented out to the international press corps. Don't know yet. Stay tuned. Those DVC trades look mighty tempting!!!!! :goodvibes

Vancouver to Whistler is approx 2 1/2 hours, on a windy dangerous highway. There are plans to upgrade the Sea to Sky Highway. There may also be buses and or trains during the Olympics.

Tickets are not yet available (not to the general public anyway).

You can check out the website at www.vancouver2010.com

We are about 45 mins from downtown Vancouver. DH and I were in Sydney for the 2000 Summer Olympics (our Honeymoon) - my dad and brother were technical judges at the track and field. And I went to the Barcelona 1992 summer games - I was 20 something and living in London and a bunch of us decided to go to Spain, we stayed at a campground and ate lots of bread and cheese in order to have money for tickets. I also went to the 1994 Lillehammer winter games - the guides and scouts of Norway hosted Guides and Scouts from around the world. It's an experience well worth it. And yes there are some disadvantages, but I still think its an awesome experience

I was looking at the site earlier tonight and it says late 08 for tickets 2.5 hours isn't such a bad drive really I drive further than that to go see hockey games now like driving to Montreal so that would be a breeze.

are we twins? i too live 45 mins from vancouver (maple ridge) and I too went to australia for our honeymoon in 2000 and went to the olympics there. saw a baseball game and a handball game. it was the only events we could get tickets for. its was awesome, although have to admit that dh was more in to it than I.

The Olympics will be exciting! :cheer2: I lived in Calgary during the '88 games, and it was fantastic! They did a lottery-type system for ticket orders back then...we were lucky to get almost everything we wanted! I don't know if they've yet determined how to distribute tickets here, but they won't be for a couple of years yet.

I think they really plan on limiting traffic on the Sea-to-Sky during the games...one accident and the whole thing shuts down.

BTW, we just came back from a weekend at Whistler. The Sea-to-Sky Hwy is windy, but is undergoing massive improvements. There are several stretches of the hwy where they have already completed lane expansions. It will be fabulous once it's completed.

If anyone does plan on going to the Olympics and commuting to Whistler, may I suggest trying to stay in North Vancouver. My in-laws live there and it takes them only 1.5 hours to make the trip to Whistler. We live in Richmond (a suburb south of Vancouver) and it takes us 2.5 hours.

Well with DVC we can book Interval 270 points for a week in a 2 bedroom at Whistler and you can book 2 years in advance. If you go with Intrawest in either Vancouver or Whistler you can only book a max of 7 months out and 4 months out. We also have friends that are RCI members so we may trade off with them and let them go to Disney while we go to the games in BC. I have allready spoken to my cousin today and he is going to get me as many hockey tickets as possible and some speed skating possibly. I also would like to see the ariels and moguls.

Amy,

I am closer than you may think - I am in Pitt Meadows!

We had tickets to track and field, mountain biking, and hockey.

They are currently reviewing the ticket system so that Vancouver doesn't have a repeat of Torino. In Torino alot of the events sold out, (to corporate sponsers, IOC etc) but there were not bums in seats - people didn't use their tickets.

We too have thought about 2010. However, I don't have any realistic expectation to be able to trade into Whistler or Vancouver. Even if someone does deposit an Olympic week I can't believe it would be made available by RCI or II, they'll likely rent them in bulk to media, travel packagers, corporations etc.

I would expect the high demand for these condo's will result in very rental prices and few will actually deposit their weeks. With all the world's media, corporations wanting rooms demand will far outstrip supply. Especially in Whistler where there's really not that many rooms.

We'll pay what we have to ... but I'm not very optimistic of a trade into Whistler.
