Value of expiring points?

After 4 years of enjoying DVC by renting points, we are looking to buy in.
I’m looking at an offering with an Aug UY that has 2012 banked points that will expire the end of July this year.

I am not going to be able to make use of the points before they expire. I’m wondering what kind of value they will have by the time we go through ROFR, close and I finally have access to the points in order to resale them.
Any money that I get from these points would effectively offset the initial cost of the purchase, so any amount ($5 - $7) would be nice.
Thoughts?

Thanks!

$0.

I don't think that you will be able to use them before they expire.

Depending on when you close, you might be able to rent the points out either by yourself (see the Rent/Trade thread) or via David's. They'd be "distressed" points so you probably wouldn't get a lot but even a few dollars per point would be better than nothing. You might want to contact David's to see what they pay.

How many points are there? You might be able to exchange them via RCI for a trip elsewhere. Or, you can try to rent the points. They will be "distressed" so you won't get the full $12-$14 that many people get with less restricted points. But even if you get $8-$9 per point it's something. The biggest problem with renting points is that the summer tends to fill up and there may not be a lot of availability to rent by the time you close.

if you just started the process now, figure like 10 weeks. So your into MAY or early JUNE. You can rent our SSR and prob get a few dollars.

There are a little over 100 pts. Not a huge amount, but I figure if I could get $5 to $7 per point that would be great and not a total write off.

Much of it is dependent on how quickly we can go through the ROFR and closing process to where my membership would be created and I'd get access to the points.

Why not make it part of your contract for purchase?
The current owner makes a reservation in your name, with a proviso that they will change the name for you, you rent the reservation, change the name on the reservation to whomever you rent to, and do not close the contract until after the trip is taken.

Good idea , but don't all reservations connected to the contract have to be cancelled to close ? Isn't that why you see "can close on x/xx" in the listings ? That means there is a reservation pending , no ?

My quote from the previous post:

Yes, that is why I said you will have to wait to close until after the reservation/travel is completed.

The more you inject special instructions, the greater the chance of problems. Close the deal, try to get MS to set up the account, load it and give you access as soon as you close. Matching a renter and a resort with availability may be difficult, that's why I posted that the points have zero value. If you do find a renter, great, if not, stuff happens.

Sorry , missed that part !

I really think that RCI is a better route. If the seller wanted to rent his/her points they would do it themselves and pocket the $$, they certainly are not going to do it for the buyer!

Here is some info about banking a DVC week into RCI: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3111429

I believe that you have until 2 years after the end of the year you banked into RCI to start your vacation and you need to pay the $95 exchange fee. A week in a studio shouldn't cost more than 134 points and a 1BR 160 points. The OP can add 34-60 points to the 100 and be able to book a vacation someplace other than Orlando (which appears to be blacked out).

thanks everyone for the suggestions and information.

My original plan was to ask the seller to rent the points now and I'd offer a slightly lower price. That was rejected.
