Vacuum cleaner deals?

I need deal help please! My vacuum cleaner just bit the dust. I know there were tons of Black Friday sales on them, but of course mine decides to die the day AFTER all of the sales.

I always hear good things about Dyson's, but I'm really not sure of what brand I want. At the moment we have a house full of carpet, but we're having hardwood installed after Christmas. So, the only carpeting that I'll have is on the stair runner. The rest of the house will be hardwood and tile.

Any recommendations of vacuum cleaners, or any specific deals right now? For hardwood, does it matter if you have an upright or a canister vacuum? I prefer upright, but my MIL told me that canisters are better for hardwood?

I bought one of those Dyson ball vacuums....can't wait until I get it.

Since you will have carpet for such a short time, try looking at Walmart. Their uprights are inexpensive. Probably under $50.
I have an older cannister I use for our carpet, sometimes I switch the beater bar off, the wand safely does my Pergo floors.
Without kids at home, most often I use a swiffer and then just pull out a small stick vac to get the crumbs etc that the Swiffer collected.
I envy you getting all hardwood!

Macys has a Dyson on Cyber Monday deal (active now) for 269, it says is orignally 529...not sure if they go for this price a lot or not but I have been putting off getting one. I may have to bite the bullet this time.

Was at Sam's Club yesterday, and they had a white Dyson for $259. Sorry, didn't really notice anymore to get the model..

Thanks everyone. I ended up ordering a Dyson DC33 at Kohls for $179 after discount and Kohl's Cash. (Out of stock now.) Kohl's is notoriously slow to ship things, so I guess I'll "fix" the old one with duct tape so it will last for another few days.

I debated on getting a cheapy vacuum cleaner from Walmart or Kmart since we'll be getting rid of all of the carpeting after the holidays and having hardwood put down. But, the cheaper ones didn't have the option of turning off the beater brush when vacuuming over wood and tile floors.

I have this one, paid $379 for a refurb. I LOVE it. It would pull up the carpet if it wasn't tacked down! Great deal, esp since it includes an accessory pack.
