Vaccine not approved for kids yet... would you still travel?

When you and your adult family members are fully vaccinated... would you still consider traveling if the kids cannot get it yet? I think it would be challenging for any parent to make that decision. Since I have kids, I don't think I will be able to return to WDW with them until they can get the vaccines too. So it is almost for sure that 2021 is a no for us.

I have three under 18 and 1 college age. One of the 3 has asthma ( 15) and one has ASD.

We as long as numbers remain trending down and more and more of population gets vaccinated , will still go. We will be as careful as we can. (N95s airport hand sanitizer etc ) I have allowed her to play soccer and attend school in person ( after discussion and her wishes and discussing risk factors vs maintaining some sense of normal. The little boys are home this year ) the risk is everywhere not just Fla.

Im ok with getting vaccinated and in no way am I anti-vax I’m just not sure how I feel about kids yet.

First off I feel that by the fall there will probably be at least one vaccine approved for kids 12 and over.

But if all adults are vaccinated and cases are way down we would travel. As long as restrictions like testing and quarantines no longer exist.

Yes my youngest would still be at risk of catching it. But the chance of him getting very sick if he did, or any other unvaccinated child, is very very low. And with cases way down and adults vaccinated he would be at a much lower risk of catching it. We would also take steps like wearing masks on planes etc.

I feel at that point he’s more at risk of something like a car accident on the way to the airport happening.

My answer is going to be different because I'm in Nova Scotia so we would be going from a place with almost no cases to a place with many cases -- so it's a No for me.

There are places to travel that don't require a flight, and probably many things you haven't done. If you can plan a family trip that is safer for them I would certainly do that instead. Disney will still be there when this is over...it can wait.

Same here - though really it's the quarantine requirement that blocks my family, moreso than the vaccine requirement.

It depends. I would prefer my son is able to get vaccinated but he's 11, turning 12 in December. I have read that J&J and another company at least, are doing trials on children, I think the J&J will be trialing infants and up so I am hopeful one will be available for kids 6 to 12 by fall. It would also make me feel better about sending him to school. However, if enough adults are vaccinated I'm not sure it will be a problem.

Since we plan to cruise, I am assuming they do what RCL is in Israel, those 16 + have to be vaccinated (because that's what the one they are using is approved for). Those children under that age don't have to be but can still travel. If those are the rules, then we'll be going. So yes, I would travel without him being vaccinated, but that's provided most adults are. And "most" is not really a number per se, just the percentage at which we see the spread drop off. Does that make sense? Hope so :)

We have been 3 times with kids during covid. The first time I was nervous, but Disney made you feel safe and most people follow the guidelines. Going to Disney has been safer than the grocery store in my opinion. We really enjoyed going in Aug when there were no people at the park. It was like having a VIP treatment, no wait times. Went in Feb and it's getting busy. So if your worried about crowds now isn't the time to go.

My concern is that as more adults get vaccinated, they will stop taking precautions even though they can still infect someone else after being vaccinated. They won't be getting tested, because they probably won't have any symptoms. That's going to leave kids even more vulnerable than they are now. By fall all of the covid deaths will be in children most likely.

It's not like there is nowhere else you can take your kids. It's not like you have to fly on a plane to have a good trip. I wouldn't chance it because the effects of covid are permanent even if your kid survives it.

Our kids are turning 16 and 12 over the next few months. Answering this today I say no. But maybe as the numbers trend lower, I would feel more comfortable. Our next "maybe" cruise is Dec (Aug is booked but that ain't happening). If Pfizer is offered, then my 16 year old can get it but not yet my 12 year old. Am hoping the 12+ group will be given the go ahead by the time the vaccine comes to DH and I, but we don't know.

My kids don't have any issues identified by doctors but when my daughter gets a cough, it usually starts out barky and wheezy....so I've always suspected some form of asthma. So covid does worry me with her (but she does go to school as it's a balance of decisions).

Luckily very few kids are getting seriously sick with Covid. I think it would be more accurate to say that by fall the Covid deaths will be in those people who, for the most part, decided not to get vaccinated rather than it being children. You do raise a good point that as people become less cautious more children could be exposed. I am hopeful that the numbers will come down and they will continue to take precautions in schools next year. Resulting in less exposure rather than more despite the loosening of restrictions. Perhaps sometime this year a vaccine will be deemed safe for children.

lol the 2 week quarantine keeps us from wanting to go anywhere, and now we don't even have the Atlantic bubble anymore. Last summer forced us to try new things at home, and that was not a bad thing.

If anything opens up late summer (either land boarder or no hotel quarantine after flight) and my wife and I are vaccinated, then we are going....without the kids (6/9/11). Surprisingly they seem accepting of this possibility.

Too many what ifs for the kids if not vaccinated. I'm not fearful of the effects of the virus per say, but the logistical fallout if one of them contracts it (with regards to getting home). Plus I would have the nagging feeling of irresponsibility if I brought them.

Yes. I'm letting my children sit in a classroom six hours a day now (and no distancing going on, let me tell you). And they aren't vaccinated now so for me personally, I'd feel like a hypocrite if I send them to school but say travel is more dangerous. Just my opinion for our personal situation.

So here's the thing though... this is never going to be over. I mean yes, the urgency of the pandemic will end some day, but Covid is going to be with us forever, per the forecast. They expect it will become a seasonal issue like influenza, requiring an annual vaccine, and that we may see pocket epidemics.

I think 12+ will be available, but I don't think anyone is predicting under 12 being available that soon unfortunately since they are literally JUST starting to trial children in the 5-11 range. Trials in children take longer than adults.

As for the original question... it will basically depend on case numbers. If they're low, then yes. We'll be driving to Florida anyways, so much less risk that way, and they would absolutely be willing to wear a mask when in line/indoors (assuming masks are no longer required by the time we travel), and the risk of outdoor transmission in Florida in summer is extremely low.

Our son turns 16 in July so I am hopeful he will be eligible for the Pfizer one in the not-to-distant future. As for traveling with him before he gets vaccinated....maybe? It really depends on where we are going. Right now we have an rv trip planned for the middle of June this year but we are sticking to BC only. We would likely be ok with within Canada but I am not sure if I would be happy going outside of Canada quite yet.

I’ve thought of this as an option. We have dvc points to use up. If we are both vaccinated we may go and leave the kids home. Or I could go with my 17 yo and dh could stay home with our 12 yos.

That’s kind of how I’m thinking. He’s in school and playing sports (with precautions) now. So I can’t say no you can’t go on a vacation if the rest of us are vaccinated and the case numbers and risk are way down.
