I watched a lot of The Travel Channel today - boy, would I like to go on the American Orient Express!!! I was thinking, what trips or vacations do I think (or hope) I can take my family on?? Here's my list:

a beach vacation (or anything that lets you see the ocean)
a mountain vacation
Washington, DC
New York City
another large American city
Alaska or Hawaii
a section of the country very different from home (Maine or California for us)
a foreign country

and, of course, Disney World!!!!

So, what would be on your list? And let's just do this for fun, so assume that real-life issues like budgets and schedules aren't important.

Bon voyage!!!!

Great thread ~ I would take them all over the USA so they could appreciate the beauty and diversity in their own country first .. NYC, Hawaii, Alaska, Grand Canyon, National parks, God willing New Orleans, hopefully hitting all 50 states. Then I would take them to Africa ,all over europe, China and Austraila.

My older's done New Orleans, but not the younger, so I'd like that. Also, NYC, Colorado for the kids and dh (I've been as a teen), Washington State and DC, California (North and South), East Coast (always wanted to see Maine and Rhode Island.........don't know why exactly), both Alaska and Hawaii.

Africa, China, Australia, Canada (not sure where, would have to research), New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, Italy, Greece, Japan, Germany, Holland, Finland, like to take the "Biblical" Tour if it was safe, Caribbean, and many places in Mexico I'd like to see!

I like your list. I'd add a National Park vacation and Canada and Mexico. We've got beach and mountains covered. We've done WDW, Hawaii, Canada, Yellowstone, and quite a few states including large cities. We have three big summer trips left before summer jobs start getting in the way. We're planning California & possibly the Grand Canyon, Washington DC & NewYork City, and Mexico. If we can, we'll throw in Alaska.

After the kids leave home, we plan to do more foreign travel. As a parent, my priority is showing my kids the US and our neighbor countries. (Of course, if money wasn't an issue we would have loved foreign travel!) So many places to see - so little time!

I'm probably following my parents footsteps. We did all domestic travel when we were kids, but they've traveled the world since we left home.

there's not much outside of the US I'll ever visit. I'd like to see Mt. Everest in person, Paris, Rome, and a round of golf at St. Andrews. everyone should see the differentiating topographies we have right here. a sunrise and sunset are totally different between the south rim of the grand canyon and the florida keys. sunrise over the DC monuments can be awesome.

Our list of places we want to see in the US alone is incredibly long. We plan to have an RV when our kids are older, and DH will be self-employed and able to travel more than he can now, so we want to take vacations that are about a month or even longer and see the country. We're going to homeschool, so we'll work it into the curriculum.

I love that show about the American Orient Express. I got on their mailing list somehow and get their booklet every year when the new iteneraries come out. That's something I want to do when DH and I are empty-nesters.

Oh, I can't believe I left out the national parks - that's the show that got me in the mood to think about this!!! Also, I'd add something tropical, like the Florida Keys, or something in FLorida that's NOT Disney related!!!! And I'd love to go to Canada...

Alaska
Hawaii
Panama Canal
New York City
Eastern Caribbean
On the beach in Florida

I have been blessed to have already done DisneyWorld 3 times and have done Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Belize, Calica, Playa Del Carmen, Merida, Key West, Progresso... We have a trip planned for a Disney Cruise next year to go to Eastern Caribbean ..

Even if I never get to go anywhere else I have been truly blessed to have done what I have so far.. but I would love to do the additional things listed at the top

alaska most def. (do it by cruise ship-inside passage) we did it last year-words, photos-nothing can match seeing it. when the kids are older we would like to travel within it.

hawaii was beautiful (only did maui-want to see much more).

want to see much more of the u.s. envy a friend whose dad was a teacher and managed to get them to all but hawaii by the time they were adults.

anyone who does california-make sure you do both southern and northern. we are soooooo much different up here (northern)-our beaches, the sierras, go to the small towns off the beaten tracks.

my dream would be to travel in such a way as to see the seasons change in various states.

I THINK I DID EVERYTHING ON YOUR LIST!

Here's my list:

a beach vacation (or anything that lets you see the ocean) ~ Daytona Beach

a mountain vacation ~ Philippines

Washington, DC ~ Smithsonian

New York City ~ Lady Liberty

another large American city ~ La, CAlifornia

Alaska or Hawaii ~ Hawaii

a section of the country very different from home (Maine or California for us)
a foreign country ~ Florida/Georgia

and, of course, Disney World!!!! ~ plenty of times!! And this is my favorite!

If money were no object, I'd say tour the US first of all. I'd be sure to include the cities of New York City, Washington DC, Charleston, New Orleans, San Diego and San Francisco. I'd also visit the Grand Canyon, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, the Rockies, much of California, some ghost towns in Arizona and California and the Ozarks. I'd also like to add much of New England, the Smokies, the Natchez Trace and the Louisiana River Road.

Then beyond the Continental US, Alaska and Hawaii would be good, somewhere in Canada (where boggles the mind!) and then the Yucatan. It would also be fun to visit a Caribbean island or two and maybe the Amazon area.

Then beyond that...where to start? Definitely Egypt. Several countries in Europe including Italy, France, Holland, all of Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland. Also, the Greek Islands so maybe a Greek cruise? Then China and Australia. Bali. An African photo safari.

Why do I feel like I'm just scratching the surface?

Planogirl's already taking us out of the US. I'll continue on that - leaving the wonderful destinations within the US (and oh, there are so many!) to those of you living there.
My dream vacations, including places I've been but also places I've dreamed about?
Canada: seeing the autumn colors near Niagara Falls; soaking in the beauty of Vancouver;
Europe: London, Rome and Paris are musts. Ireland, Northern England (oh, that beautiful Durham Cathedral!) and fishing up in the wilder parts of Scotland; sampling the wines in southern France; walking along the pilgrimage routes in Spain; finding wonderful off-the-beaten-track restaurants in Italy and Greece; soaking up the sun along the beautiful Croatian coast; Santorini. (My apologies to Austria, Germany, the Benelux countries, Scandinavia, and Central Europe; there's just too much)
the Middle East: visiting the bazaars and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and then staying in some of the luxurious hotels along the Turkish coast for wonderful pampering; steeping in the historical biblical places in Israel
Africa: walking around Cairo, seeing the Pyramids and sailing along the Nile; a safari or two in Kenya or Botswana; wine-tasting in South Africa; getting lost in the mist of Victoria Falls
Asia: seeing the Taj Mahal with someone you love; staying at the royal hotel in Hua Hin in Thailand; visiting Angor Wat; visiting the Great Wall and then Xian and the terracotta army; shopping in Hong Kong and Singapore; staying at a ryokan in Japan, preferably with Mt Fuji in the background;
Australasia: seeing Ayer's Rock at different times of the day (does anyone know how to do this without the flies?), relaxing over a few beers in Sydney; walking the mountains in New Zealand; staying at the beach in Tahiti or Fiji;
South America: carnival time in Rio; dancing the tango in Buenos Aires; seeing the Amazon; climbing to see Machu Picchu.

One lifetime just isn't enough...

SPAIN! I left out Spain and it's on the top of my list. I must be sleepy.

I started travelling when I was a child. To date, I've hit most of the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia. I'd still like to visit the Galapogos Islands, Easter Island, Machupichu, and much of the African continent.

I would like to take my boys to Colorado to see the Rockies.

After doing the US must-do's, I'd put Isreal/Eqypt, Italy, and Greece on my list of must-do's. Those are the cradles of civilization and I was fortunate to have lived and seen all of them.

Everyone should see those places at least once in their lives, especially the Holy Land.

Having just gone to Hawaii, I've crossed a major destination off my list.

On my list: Alaska, Montana, Yosemite, Florida Keys

I like travelling around the U.S. but there are a few spots I'd like to see at some point: Tuscany, Greek Islands, African Safari, London.

DH refuses to leave the country  so this list is a little different than what I would put on it personally - these are for FAMILY vacations...

A cruise in Alaska
Arizona
Texas
Moline Illinois (for our John Deere fanatics in the house)
Wisconsin Dells (cuz DH wants too)
Hawaii (I need to get to other islands as I was not very impressed with Waikkiki)
Key West
New Orleans
Niagra Falls (we went with my mil but without dh a few years ago)
Grand Canyon
New York City (usually a girls trip everyother year and I know I will never get DH there - he can't stand cities - going to Fenway on teh subway is tough for him - lol)
Tennessee
and I can't wait for the day we can take the 56 Chevy and just cruise old route 66!
