We have been going every year for close to 30 years. We started years ago and rented a 2-bedroom beachfront condo when the kids were small, and did all of the touristy things back then. As the years went by had to keep renting larger condos.
Nowadays we stay in a beachfront campground in a motorhome, typically only a few or no kids with us. Take the dog for a long walk on the beach in the morning, set up the chairs and umbrellas and enjoy the beach for the day, everyday.
We no longer go to any tourist traps, downtown area (sketchy) or pricey restaurants, and try to find Ma and Pa type restaurants, and off-the-beaten path things to do. We like the Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet. We still enjoy it for a week or two every year, but also go to Destin area beaches for a week, and maybe a cruise, anywhere with sun and a beach.
Tried Topsail Island one year, and it was just too low-profile in terms of activities for the kids (older by then).
