Can someone please simplify UY for me and if it pertains to when I can make a reservation. I've been looking at a few contracts and I'm wondering how important use year is for booking my reservation, or if I can always book 11 mo ahead at my home resort regardless of UY date. Thanks!

My understanding is that it only matters if you vacation near the end of your use year and may cancel your reservations (thus not giving yourself a lot of time to reschedule your vacation).

When my husband and I purchased our membership, it was not on our minds at all. It was not until I started reading a lot of threads here that I learned it 'mattered'.

There was a discussion here recently about adding points and whether or not your different contracts should have the same UY. Some thought that yes, it simplified things and others thought that it was no big deal. I made a mental note that if I were ever to purchase more points, I would probably want my points to all be in the same UY but that is because I want things simply. (I am already concerned that I may forget to bank my 'extra' 24 points from 2013 into 2014. And this is pretty silly since I have a tendency to borrow more than I bank points).

Your last question was about making a reservation at the end of your UY. And I believe you would need to bank your points if your points into the next year if your reservation fell into the following year. And if you cancelled those point would have to be used in that banked UY.

Yes, you can always book at your home resort 11 months in advance. Think of your UY is when your points go from being next UY's points to current UY's points.

When you call to make a reservation, everything is based on the UY of travel. Any trip can be "paid" for using banked points from the UY prior to travel, the UY of travel, and borrowed points from the UY after travel.

So, if you have a June UY and want to travel in January 2013, it would take place in your 2012 UY. You could call to book this in Feb 2012. MS would then look at your account and use any banked 2011 points you have, 2012 points, and then borrow 2013 points if needed.

Traveling at the beginning of the UY gives you the most flexibility in terms of what you can do if you have to cancel, change, or re-schedule a trip, but plays absolutely no role in when you call to book your trip.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for clarifying! Sandisw and chalee94 thank you for truly simplifying things for me so I now understand!!
