First let me thank all of you that have replied to my various questions. I hope at some point in the future I can return the favor in helping a "newbie".

I have read all the various threads on UY and what recommendations are made as to what UY to get based on your normal travel months.

I guess I need someone to write it in crayons for me.

My family travel habits are in the months of September and October.

The first contract that my friends at Disney decided they wanted also had a UY of June. I am looking to make an offer on one now with a UY of October.

Based on my travel habits, why would this not be a desirable UY for me ?

An August or September UY would be better based on your current travel habits.

An Oct UY would be okay for Oct reservations, but not for September reservations. A reservation in September is after the banking deadline of 5/31 for an Oct UY. If you needed to cancel a September reservation (with an Oct UY), you would need to do so on or before 5/31 to be able to bank any bankable (current year) points.

Which three consecutive months are you least likely to travel in? Pick the first use year after those months.

An Oct UY is the worst possible for Sept trips. If you had a relatively last minute cancellation you might have as little as a week or two to try and use the points before the expired since a last minute Sept cancellation would be past the May 31st banking deadline. But, if you never cancelled it wouldn't make any difference what UY you had and Sept would be fine.

Let's make an example, maybe it's clearer.

You buy the October UY contract. You then use your 2015 points to book a reservation in September 2016. In fact your contract will give you 2015 points that are usable between 10/1/2015 to 09/30/2016.
If you don't have any problem, that's fine, you take your vacation and you'll make wonderful memories.
But what if in July 2016 you discover you cannot go? If you cancel your reservation in July you'll have already passed the banking deadline so you need to use the points by the end of September. You have only 2 months to try to schedule a different trip or rent them out. With such a short notice it will be difficult to find any availability and if you rent them out you probably need to do so at a low price per point, maybe just to cover the MF.

Instead, what if you had a September UY, you would book the September vacation using your 2016 points (or 2015 banked points). If you cancel the reservation in July, you have one whole year to schedule another vacation, because these points could be used up to 31/08/2017. Plenty of time to schedule a new flight for your family of rent them out at a premium rate.
That's why we often say: the correct UY is like a free travel insurance.

Thanks for your reply. Using your September UY example (using 2016 points), if I cancel the reservation in July, I don't understand how I have until 31/08/17 to use the points when in the October UY using the same cancellation July date I only have till 30/09/16 to use or lose the points. In both examples, July would already be past the 8th month banking mark.

Thanks for clarifying this.

In the example, the reservation is in September. Those points are valid beginning in September, whereas with an October UY, you're dealing with points that expire at the end of September. In the example provided, an October UY would be using 2015 points, but a Septermber UY would be using 2016 points.

So in conclusion, if we normally go in September and October, it would be best for me to get an UY of June or August?

Again, THANKS TO ALL AND THIS SITE !

Based on your vacation habits, September would be best for you, but June or August works too. You just would want to avoid a use year of October, December or February due to banking deadlines.

Sure sorry, as others have pointed out I made a mistake on that point. Points would be usable until September.

If you would never go in the summer then Sept is actually the best UY as previously mentioned but June and August will be fine also and open up your search a bit.
