Okay, if you don't mind a small drive there is a GREAT/FANTASTIC/WONDERFUL place for barbeque on the outskirts of Beaufort. It's called Sgt. White's Barbeque. I found out about it after it was written up in Gourment magazine. Sgt. White is a retired Parris Island drill sgt. and cook with southern roots who learned home cooking from the women in his family.
To get there:
drive off island on 278
take the exit onto 170 toward Beaufort
when you get to hwy. 17 turn right
it is on the corner where the Piggly Wiggly grocery store is, but it is an outbuilding (used to be a bank or something)---you will smell the hickory smoke and know you're at the right place
Lunch is cheap, something like $8, for pork barbeque and choice of 3 (?) delicious sides and iced tea. Totally worth the trip to get there. If you're fortunate you'll get a glimpse of Sgt. White behind the window in back where he does the cooking.
