We opted to take the FCC from our cancelled Hawaii cruise and put it toward this fall's WB Transatlantic instead, so we ended up with some extra nonrefundable onboard credit we'll need to use up. I thought to myself...no problem...we'll use if for pre-cruise hotel, transfers excursions and our gratuities. I was grateful that our TA pointed out that we CAN use the onboard credit for gratuities, but ONLY if we prepay them...we would not be able to apply the nonrefundable credit once we we on the ship. So we instructed her to prepay the gratuities using the credit now.

Perhaps you already knew this, but we did not, so I thought I would mention it to the group.

Thanks for the tip we are also on the Hawaii cruise and are still deciding what to do. Did your travel agent say what would happen with your FCC if your westbound were also to be canceled? Then at that point you can request a cash refund correct?

Did she also say why that is? We've had nonrefundable onboard credit (from OBB) and it was used for our gratuities, I don't see how this is different

You can always request a refund in the method of original payment (credit card, Disney Gift Cards, etc) if DCL cancels the cruise, or you can take whatever incentive DCL offers to take a credit for a future cruise so they don't have to refund you your payment.

However, if the 2nd cruise is cancelled, don't expect to be able to ask for the 125% FCC as the refund; you'll only get back your original payment.

Yes, I believe we could request a refund if that happens

This doesn't make any sense at all. If you prepay them now or if they charge to the onboard account is no difference. The extra FCC just gets applied as non-refundable OBC. The tips will just apply to the same account. I'm not buying it. I think your TA is wrong.
I don't know, and agree it seems strange. I have used OBC towards gratuities before, so I don't know why this credit would be different, but she made a point of mentioning it, so we decided not to take any chances, since there was no harm in prepaying

That's not what I was told about using OBC as another poster said.

Yeah, pretty sure your TA is either (1) wrong; or (2) gets some sort of incentive (from Disney or her travel agency) based on the total up front paid cruise fare including prepaid gratuities. Probably the latter.

Once the on-board credit is on your room, I don't think DCL even has a way to restrict it for use on one thing versus another. I mean, even if you pre-pay gratuities, that just shows up as a regular credit on your stateroom account, and you could then cancel the gratuity at guest services, pay cash tips, and use the "pre-paid gratuity" credit for something else.

I was told you can use it on anything that you will book through DCL, including transfers, hotels, flights, insurance or even a land portion, as long as it's booked through DCL and extends from the new cruise. Of course, if you're taking any excursions, I would expect the overage to get eaten up that way, as well.
