What happens if you don't have enough points a ticket. Can you use points and then pay the balance with cash?

I don't think you can combine points and cash to purchase a ticket. I recently had almost enough so I figured the difference and it was cheaper to buy the extra points than to buy a full price ticket.

No. You have to either pay in cash for the entire transaction or purchase more points.

I have been a little short on points before, and gotten points online. Was cheaper than getting a ticket, I think we will have to do that again when we fly. But it was easy to do, and the points were there right away.

Chaoster...Please note (especially since this is the budget board)...You can not use a Southwest gift card to purchase additional points. I bought a gift card to pay for my extra points since I would get fuel perks on gift cards. But the points can't be purchased with gift cards. However, the tax amount you must pay when using points can be paid for with a Southwest gift card. :)

You can also do the math to see if it's cheaper to buy more points OR to book one way (or one leg) with "cash" and the rest of the trip with points. When there are sales, one does sometimes work out to be way better than the other way!

yes thanks I was looking into points one way and cash the return home or maybe I'll sign up for the southwest credit card and get 50,000 points that will cover the whole trip.

Yes, it just expired. Sometimes buying the points cost more than the ticket. We transferred points to my daughter's acct and I think it was like $40. So if you have a spouse with extra points you can transfer.

If you buy points, you don't get them right away. I did this and it took 24 hours for them to be put in my account.

I just bought some today, the points went right in the account, as soon as I purchased them(didn't have enough points for 2 flights). I went ahead and booked the 2 flights, during the same transaction.
