Using points to stay in your room on the last day

We are trying something for our next vacation. We are spending points for our last day to allow us to stay in the room all day. Our flight is 9pm at night and is an 8 hour flight. We normally check out of our 1 bed in OKW at 11am and we are then homeless until the flight. So we decided to splash out and keep the room. We just thought it would allow us to have a proper day and still have a base to shower eat etc. We always feel grubby on the last day and it is a pain carrying all the documents around etc. Does anyone else do this? or do you think it is a waste of points?

I do not think it is a waste of points, and we have considered doing it...and in fact, we may next June when we'll be going from VB to BWV on a Wednesday. We have a BC and 2 OVIR's and we'll be headed to a GV and 1 BW studio. At 7 months out, I am thinking of extending the stay in one of the OVIR, so some people have a place to hang out in case they don't want to leave early for WDW. Alternately, I asked the CM when I was making the ressie about reserving the BW view studio for the day before so that if more people wanted to get to WDW early, there would at least be a studio for the group to have. The CM says that people do do those things.

I haven't done with DVC....but I'm still a new owner:goodvibes

In Aug...I'm going to FQ....we were supposed to leave FRI....
Airfare was cheaper on thurs night.....
So we are doing the same thing....keeping the room for our 8:00 flight...

Of course we have free dining so I felt it was a wash....
But I can see doing it again.

We do this all of the time when our flights are 6pm or later. It is well worth th points!

I like to be home for dinner when leaving Disney BUT when I leave Las Vegas I like to be home for breakfast!

I have booked a hotel room for the day we were leaving because I didn't want to be without a room for 10 hours. If I was leaving Disney in the evening I would get the room too !!

Frankly... it is the day that makes the stay... soo.. having your room through another day seems very sensible to me. I love getting a room early... almost like an extra day, but adding on a day just makes real sense to me if you're flight is leaving late... just makes sense... Hope your last day is real special...

I have done it. I just swing by the front desk on my way to the airport and get my bill to make sure everything is OK. IMHO it can be very nice.

That's a great idea. And I wonder if those are the rooms that are ready at 7 AM???

I don't think it's a waste of points either - and if you're in a 2bedroom, couldn't you always go down to a studio? OKW is a very economical use of points to begin with. :thumbsup2

Yikes! I wouldn't want to check out at 11:00, then possibly wait until 4:00 for a room..

Anyway, I would do it if you have the extra points. We will likely do the same thing in reverse in the future... Book a room for the night before we arrive so we can check in early. :smokin:

I'm thinking that like us, you bought DVC to improve your vacation experience. Using your points as you describe allows you to do just that. How can that be wasteful, if you have the points to use? Sounds like that last night of points is helping you enjoy your vacation more, and that's the whole point of DVC (for us anyway).

Now if it were a cash reservation....I'd probably feel differently even though it's the same theory of "spending" points. But seeing an actual dollar amount associated with that last night might talk me out of it.

I thought it was possible to give up the 1 bedroom portion of the room and just move your stuff into the studio part of your 2-bedroom. :confused3 I've never done it - but I thought I had heard of such things happening.

You might be able to do it, but that is not in any way guaranteed nor a part of policy. Reservations for different sized units are considered separate reservations and, as a matter of policy, cannot be linked though a request to avoid moving can always be made.

I've read here about things working both ways. You try to arrange for it when you check in, but it was never a guarantee from what people say.

Did this on our last trip, and doing it again on the next one - made it very relaxing. For us, it is definitely a good use of our points. :thumbsup2

WOW what an awesome idea....never thought of that. That is worth doing even if you stay at a regular Disney Resort......especially is you have little ones. I could see doing this if the checkout day was a weekday but not the high point Friday or Saturday.
