Using points & cash for cruise???

Has anyone been able to do this? With the points I have remaining for this use year, I was wondering if I could book a cruise using both points and cash since I won't have enough points. I don't like to borrow from the next year.

Any thoughts/experience with this?

Yes you can. Each passenger can only be paid for using one method (cash or points). Any cash portion is due at the time of booking.

What if the person that you are paying cash for is unable to make it? I know that if booking on points, if there is any change to the reservation, you have to pay a $95 fee to rebook. But what happens if the third or fourth person of our party, which we have paid cash for is unable to make the trip? Would we get a refund if they backed out before the deadline, and would we have to pay the $95 fee to rebook the reservation?

Unfortunately they make you pay the $95 fee any time you make a change; like add or drop a person. What I have heard some people do is book the cruise on cash but when it gets closer change it over through member services. You just have to do it before the final payment is due. At least than you are only about 3 months out from the cruise and should have a better idea of who is definately going. Good luck and have fun. I am going on my 3 rd Disney cruise in March They are great.

You cannot count on the ability to do that - switch from cash to points. DVC only has so many cabins for each cruise. Once it sells all of those, you cannot switch your reservation from cash to points.

We have two tripple balcony rooms booked for Dream for next July and even though our plans oure made with my mother and my sister and her family, not sure I want to put all our points with DCL right away since once they are there, they must be used there.
Anyone ever had any problems? If so, how close to your sail date did you try to swtich over.

Yes, I had a problem. When I booked my Med cruise in 2007 many of the categories were sold out for DVC, yet still available for cash only through DCL direct. I ended up booking two staterooms, both a guarantee category only, for a cat 6 and a cat 11. We booked about 6 months prior to sail date. We were notified of our stateroom numbers a month prior to sailing, when those who were cancelling had done so and we were able to be slotted into a room.

The inventory available to DVC members is not the same as the inventory available to DCL passengers booking via cash. You are not actually "switching" but you are cancelling your cash reservation and rebooking. You will wait for your cash deposits to be returned. You will be booking subject to availability on DVC points at that time, and you may have to choose another category, book a guarantee category without a room number available, or find yourself unable to book the same cruise at all.

Plus your booking fee and cash portions will all be due the day you book with MS, regardless of the fact that your cash deposits will not yet be returned to you from DCL. So lots of "ifs" in this scenario. It may work, but it may not work, too.
