Using OBC to book placeholder and/or cruise

Hello, everyone,

I tried searching for the answer, but just can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.

Can I use on-board credits to book a future cruise or a placeholder?

Thanks.

Not in my experience. They are charged to the card you have on file or a different card if you give it to them. They are not charged to your on board account.

Like the PP said, I have always been told that a credit card must be used and that it cannot be put onto my onboard account.

You can use your onboard credit to purchase a Disney gift card in one of the shops. Use that gift card as your deposit for your cruise.

I didn't even think of doing that. Have you done this in the past?

I also emailed DCL this same question. I had moved funds from my DVA to my upcoming cruise on-board credit account.

This was my specific question: Can I use the on board credit to pay a deposit for a future cruise or place holder?

This is the answer from DCL: You may confirm your Onboard Offer/Placeholder Booking using funds from your Onboard Account.

If I were you, I would take that email with you because, historically, you have not been able to charge the deposit/placeholder for a future cruise to your onboard account. So don't be surprised if you are told 'no'.

That was my plan. When I first made this post, I was pretty sure I knew the answer to my original question, but also emailed DCL as well. I wasn't surprised by two different answers. I have a back up plan in case I cannot use my on-board credit.

Update: While we were not able to use OBC to book a placeholder, the DCL rep told us to go purchase a gift card (using OBC) in the on-board shop and use it to pay for the placeholder. We did this with no issues.

Great idea! The only issue I'd have with that is making sure you're 100% certain you are going to use the OBB. We ended up cancelling our placeholder OBB and wouldn't have wanted to have a $200 gift card hanging around. But, if you're certain you're going to sail - this is a GREAT idea!

Thanks for updating - nice to know that DISers are consistently more correct with their answers than DCL staff themselves.

Actually, if you get the gift card with the onboard credit that otherwise would just disappear (for example the one that you got from a previous onboard booking), it is actually better to have that gift card with the deposit returned onto it. Because otherwise you would not have anything. However, it is a good warning to make sure to keep the gift card that was used in case you end up cancelling.

True, though I can't imagine ever having enough non-refundable OBC on a Disney cruise that I would not be able to use it in other ways, LOL! That may be just me, though ;)

I agree! But I think sometimes there are special circumstances, for example on those recent changed cruises when people got additional onboard credit. Instead of drinking it away or buying lots of souvenirs, it would be nice to be able to use that to book a new cruise.
