using dvc points outside of 7 home resorts

when does it make sense to use your dvc points in the other different options, with DVC?

Conceriege collection?
Adventurers collecton?
trade with II?
Disney Cruise Line?
at Disney NOn DVC hotels?

is it often better, to just rent your DVC points for $10 per point cash
and then just rent, exactly what accomodations that you need for your trip, in a more convenient manner.

Went spent 3 nights at the Plaza in a deluxe room, rack rate at the time was 750 per night... We spent 55 points per night, so renting out points would not have covered our stay, unless we charged a lot per point...

Another factor, My husband would never shell out that kinda of dough for a hotel room, but with points it seemed to hurt less...

If I use them at the plaza in ny,ny Do i still go thru DVC MS?
If so, what happens, if I cancell? Can they be used elsewhere in dvc home resorts, or do they become worthless??

Yes, I booked the reservation via MS. They took all my info, dates etc, and said they would call back in about a week. They called the next day saying we were booked. 3 nights 55 points per night. Deluxe.

If I had canceled, I believe the points would have become reservation points with limited use, and I know you cant use them for DVC resorts, not sure about WDW resorts... details are lost on me now, maybe someone else will pipe in.

Hi KANSAS,
Laurabearz is correct. Once you book into the concierge collection your points become "reservation" points and cannot be used at any DVC resort - only for hotels in the concierge collection, Disney collection and DCL. They cannot be banked so would have to be used within the Use Year they came from. The cancellation guidelines are outlined in the member guidebook. For some hotels it is 3- 14 days out (pg. 29 member guide) with no penalty. Other hotels are 6 days out. (p.22-23) HTH

Economically, I would have to say that the Disney Collection makes the least amount of sense to use DVC points at (weird but true IMO) - the rest of the collection would depend on time of year, location, discount rates, and ease of getting into without an exchange of some type
