Using Disney Reward Dollars Onboard

What is the easiest way to do this? Our cruise is paid off, and we have about $400 in Disney Rewards. I'm not saying we won't be taking additional trips, but we are at that point where I would just like to use them and if we go again, we will save up again.

Can I apply them to our onboard expenses somehow?

One way is to use the rewards to purchase Disney gift cards. I know you can apply the DGCs to the onboard account.

Yes. you can call OR you can go online and purchase an "amenity" for the $400. They will use the "amenity" first before a gift card if you have gift cards to add first.

The amenity will be listed in the folder you receive when you get onboard.

If a location accepts Disney Gift Cards, they most likely also accept Disney Visa Redemption Cards.

Stop by Guest Services and have them apply the Rewards Redemption Card to your onboard account. Anything charged to your account -- tips/gratuities, excursions, drinks, adult dining, souvenirs, etc. will all go against the balance until it's gone.

I added both Disney Gift Cards and a Rewards Redemption Card at Guest Services on the first day.

Only thing is that they can't look up the balance before making a charge against the card, so you need to know the approximate amount. (I knew the rewards redemption card had $38 and some cents; they charged it $30 and then it came up that there was $8.34 left on the card which they charged as a 2nd transaction.)

The most important thing is you have to order the redemption card first and have it mailed to you. You can do this online at chase.com You can transfer all of the $400 to your redemption card or a partial amount. Once you have the redemption card you can apply that to your onboard account onboard.

That's weird. We tried that in November 2021 and they said there was no way to do that :P

Write down the exact amount that is on the redemption card before going to guest services. I did this in august, and the CM had me call chase on their satellite phone to figure out how much was on the card. Ended up taking a long time to add to our account. Lesson learned and will know the balance for our cruise next month.

I put a little post-it note on each redemption or gift card. :-)

We have always brought our rewards card and applied it to our on board account

I have had Guest Services apply my Disney Rewards redemption card to my onboard account on at least 5 cruises. The most recent was 3 years ago, but I haven't heard that this is no longer possible. As others have said, you do need to have a physical card and indicate the amount the amount to "charge." If I'm not sure how much we'll spend onboard, I have gone to Guest Services twice, once early in the cruise with the amount for excursions and events that I know we're doing, and again later in the cruise to include other purchases (or, usually, to include the amount left on the card once we've spent at least that much).

Yup, we went to GS in November 2021, asked them to apply X to the account and they told us they could only apply it to existing charges.
So, we basically came back after we made the charge to pay it down.

Ah. That makes some sense as a new policy, if it is. They don’t want to use a gift card to apply more than is on an account, because they don’t want to refund an unused balance to the original card after the cruise, then hear from guests who no longer have that card. DCL has had to do that when people pay for cancelled cruises with gift card, so perhaps they are trying to minimize that situation.

We just did the Vancouver to Hawaii cruise this year on the Wonder, and I had no problem going to GS and applying both Disney gift cards as well as the balance of my Disney Visa Rewards card to my account as a credit. Did this on the 1st day.
