If we have to change airlines to catch a commuter home, do we have to leave the secured area of an airport and go to the front desk of the second airline to check in?

No. Once you are in the secured area all the airlines are behind this point. Only thing is they check your ticket before boarding your flight.

Hold on there. It depends on the airport. Ewr has 3 separate terminals and in two of them you have 3 unconnected secure areas. Mco has two different sides, each with separate security.

Other airports are different. To get a more accurate answer we need to know which airport and which airlines.

As long as the commuter airline is a subsidiary of the first, it works just like 2 planes for the same airline. If you have them both on one ticket, you're fine. You would only have to check-in again if you had 2 separate tickets.

My son would be flying into Cleveland on sw and then taking a commuter to pkb. I believe this would be a united commuter.

I really appreciate the help. I've never do e this before.

Cleveland is a hub for United. Check online for a layout of CLE.

It appears that SW comes into Concourse B and United uses Concourse C and D. Someone who knows Cleveland better will be able to tell you if your son has to clear security, but to me it appears he will.

If it were not for a ton of sw points I wouldn't think about him changing airlines. But I'd live for that first leg to be free.

Southwest and United don't share the same system. If he doesn't have checked luggage, AND is able to check in for his commuter flight online, then no, he won't need to go to the ticket counter. If he has checked luggage, he will have to retrieve it from baggage claim, and go to the next airline's ticket counter to check the luggage.

I agree, Southwest does not interline luggage. Plus if the first flight is late, there is no protection on the second flight like there would be if it was the same airline. He would be a "no show".
