Used DS system from Gamestop?

DS has a DS Lite he got for his birthday in June. He really wanted an XL, but my mom got him the lite version. He has taken decent care of it, and I called today and they will give a combo of 63(cash and store credit), and we can get a used one for 138, so it will cost me around 70. Is this a good way to go? He wants it to count as a Christmas gift, but I'm not sure. Thoughts?

My DD is a Game Advisor for Gamestop. I will ask her about the specifics of the Used gaming hardware they sell and if no one posts before I talk to her (she is at college) I will let you know what I find out.

I would love to trade my boys' systems in for the DSi's but they sadly have not taken great care of them--they have had them for quite some time--so I don't know if they will give me anything. Have to sneak them away from them to check it out soon.

As far as a used system, they are always in great refurbished condition and do have a warranty for some time period. We have done that and it's definitely a good idea.

The first part here is one fact to consider, the second part is my opinion.

Fact:
Does he have any Game Boy Advance games? If he upgrades to any other DS made past the Lite (DSi, DS XL, 3DS) he will lose the Game Boy Advance slot and not be able to play those games. Once I get a 3DS sometime in the future, I won't be trading in my DS Lite because I don't want to lock myself out from replaying older games I already own.

Opinion:

I'm not sure I see the wisdom in spending even more money to upgrade from one obsolete system to another obsolete system. The 3DS is what Nintendo is developing and supporting right now and since he already has a perfectly functional DS I don't see the point of spending more money for something that isn't better and isn't even new.

Full disclosure: I hate the DS XL. I think it's way too big to be easily portable and in my opinion, the graphics look stretched out and bad, like they just took a picture and blew it up and they didn't care if it looked pixelated. Does he want it for any reason beyond "it's bigger"? Just thinking he should have a look at one in the store to see the graphics and the feel of it in his hands before making a decision.

My boys are asking Santa for DSis this year & I've been crossing my fingers for a decent price since I'll need to buy 2. The only Nintendo systems that seem to be on sale are the 3DSs so I've also been looking at the refurbished systems. GameStop & Best Buy both have refurbished systems & you may want to check out Best Buy's site also.

I have brought used systems from Gamestop and they turned out great. Go a week before you plan to buy and ask to them to call you if they get a good system/one color you want. All used systems are not the same so have a look at a few and then buy.

3DS has had a lot of issues mainly which is kids complaining of dizziness and weak eyesight so DSi xl is a good upgrade and money well spent.

I hear this occassionally about the 3DS but I have to say it isn't a factor. You always have the option to turn off the 3D function when and if it gets to be a strain on your eyes. I agree with a pp, if you're going to upgrade I'd go up to the 3DS.
