I'm trying to understand use years. If I want to travel mostly over the summer in June and winter break in December, what use years would I purchase? Would it be July and January to give me 11 months out? I want to pick up my first contract via resale soon and the second direct at DLT once it releases. Also trying to understand banking and borrowing. When would I need to bank points for a July use year and I assume I borrow points July 1st? Also, if you wanted a WDW resort on the monorail with studios readily available, which one would you purchase? I assume we will eventually graduate to bigger rooms when our kids are grown, but a studio is fine for now. They're both boys and share a bed just fine on trips. We love GF and Poly. I have yet to stay at Contemporary. Thanks!

Use year has nothing to do with when you are able to book.

Its only to do with WHEN you get your points.

UY is only really important if you need to cancel.

I have August UY. So if I have a booking and cancel within 30 days it goes into holding. That means I have to use it by the end of July (in time for 1st August).

I have 21 contracts and they all have the same use year. You can get different ones but they are each a different membership. You can transfer points but you have to plan and its more work.

In terms of banking and borrowing, I have to bank points by end of March for the August UY.

I can then book a trip after 1st August (even now, when I have 0 points) as I know I will have points allotted come 1st August. It

As for studio you have Poly which is either studio or bungalow.

I own at VGF as well. They are about to release a load of points for direct purchase for a load of studios.

BLT is nice but I only ever stay in 1BR generally so can't say what the studios are like

To help a little, there are not 12 Use Years. They have February, March. April, June, August, September, October & December.

So, if I get a June use year, my points will be available June 1st! Then, if I get a December use year, my points will become available December 1st. That's impressive that you have 21 and they all have the same use year. I assume there is a benefit to placing them in the same use year then? I saw that they were about to release some new direct at VGF. I suppose I could consider 2 direct purchases depending on the asking price. I figured I would go resale for the WDW property so I can also afford direct at DL when it opens. Thanks for the reply.

As it turns out, I misunderstood the months I needed anyway. I would want June or December. Nice to see those are available. Thank you.

Points are always there. The start of the UY just changes which points can be used for trips.

If you are traveling summer and December, then a June UY fits well as both those travel times fit in the first 8 months, which allows you to still bank points if something happens and you can’t go or need to change the dates.

You can still book both at 11 months out. For example, if you want to travel in July and December 2023.

Those trips fall in a June 2023 UY. You can book those trips using banked 2022 points, 2023 points, and borrow up to 50% of your 2024 points.

Each can be booked exactly 11 months out at your home resort because it goes by when the trip happens, and not when you book.

Now, say you get a Dec UY and want to travel June and Dec 2023. The June trip would fall in your Dec 2022 UY and can be booked with banked 2021, 2022, and borrowed up to 50% of your 2023 UY points.

The Dec trip falls in your Dec 2023 UY, which means that one can use banked 2022, 2023, and borrowed up to 50% of 2024 UY points.

You would book these trips the exact same date as you would if you own a June UY.

If it were me, I’d try for a June UY as borrowing from a Dec UY for a summer trip can be risky because once borrowed, they would have to be used by November 30th. If you had to cancel, it might be tough to reschedule a trip as mod September to end of November is a busy DVc time and rooms might be hard to get.

The points are deposited 3 years in advance. I have an April Use Year, if I look at my account online, I see April 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. On 4/1, 2025 will be deposited. This is because some exchanges can be booked 2 years in advance. The concept that points are deposited when a use year starts is not correct. They are there years in advance and are used based on the date of stay.

As mentioned, UY points will always be there available. They don’t load in at the start of your UY. You can book a reservation within your UY 11 months out for a home resort and 7 months out for other qualified resorts. Banking points can be done within the first 8 months of the UY. UY becomes important if cancel a reservation, being able to still bank points, otherwise they have to be used by the end of the UY. Best to book less reservations late in your UY. The yearly fees come each January for every UY.

So if my use year is June 2022, I can book a reservation starting June 1st, 2022 until May 31st 2023 and have until January 31st to bank them? I think I get it. Thanks!

With your love for VGF and the monorail, see where the direct price lands before committing to a resale contract. Will be an exciting time to see what happens to VGF resale prices once DVC goes active sales again. For family growth, that resort will be perfect with more Studio options.

With a June UY, bookings for June 1, 2023, reservation can be made 11 months prior..(July 1, 2022). Yes June UY banking by January 31.

Thanks, I am leaning toward VGF. Waiting to see where the pricing lands does make sense. It could affect resale pricing, too.

You can book at any time with points you have. So today is February 19, 2022. Can book your home resort for January 19, 2023 and the other resorts September 19, 2022. Can book up 7 nights. If want more, you modify adding nights.

Thanks for the tip.

Once you establish the membership and UY, they will match your UY when you purchase DLT points in the future.

Yeah, I'm thinking I would like to keep them both in June. So, I will either fine an initial resale with a June UY and buy DL direct and ask for a June UY to match or buy VGF2 and DL with June UY direct. Just waiting on pricing. Thanks for all of your help.

Great way to do it. Keeping the names on deed the same and keeping the same UY, will keep it in the same membership. Have fun on your path to joining DVC!
