I am a new DVC member and I think I have a very important question.

I am new to DVC like January 26, 2008 NEW.

I purchased 160 points. When I received my documents it stated that my USE YEAR is OCTOBER.

Well Disney gave me 160 free points. I think that is what everyone is referring to as Developer points. When I log into my DVC account they say that these points are October 2007 points.

When I booked my first AKV vacation. The person used my OCTOBER 2007 points (my developer points).

Now here is my question I have no intentions of going on another trip this year which would use my OCtober 2008 points. Which are the original points that I would have bought into but since i have the free points my real points are still there. QUESTION: I have seen on this website and a few others that people with OCTOBER UY should bank by March 31. Does that mean I need to bank my points ASAP or I will lose them?

If you bought last month directly from DVC, you have 2007 points. With an OCT use year (same as me) we are in our 2007 Use year. Our 2008 year won't begin until Oct 2008...make sense?

So, If I'm understanding you correctly, you have current USE year points AND Developer Points. You should make sure your AKV reservation uses your Devloper points. Your 07 points should be banked into your 08 Use year, assuming you are sure you won't be needing them before October. New Banking rules took affect begining this year. You may bank 100% of your points during the first 8 months of your use year. So for us with an OCT UY, we have till the end of May. After which, there is NO banking.

Ok let me take a shot at this. I am a relatively new DVCer myself. Were you explicitly told those Oct07 points are developer points? When we purchased, we had a FEB UY begining this year. We were also given FEB07 points. These were regular points. We were able to bank them and there were no restrictions on their use. I suspect this is what you got.

If your points are the same, the current 160 points (OCT07 Points) are in the current use year since (ie if you were a long time member you would have received your annual allotment on October and you have until OCT 08 to use them). If you were not going to use these you would need to bank them by June - 8 months into your use year. Come OCT 2008 you will receive another 160 points and the cycle continues.

I can't speak to developer points if that is indeed what you received. I will rely on the experts to help out. Hopefully my explaination was clearer than mud.

The points you see on the members' website are your regular points. Developer points are not shown in your online account.

If you did get developer points with your purchase they are handled separately by Member Services. They expire one year from your purchase date so you should try to use them first, before you use your regular (Oct '07) points because your regular points can be banked into your 2008 Use Year if you have no plans to use them for a stay between now and Sep 30, 2008. Just be aware that developer points cannot be used until you are within 7 months of your check-out date.

Developer points don't have a UY. They have no home resort. They are to be used within one year at the 7 months or less to make a reservation. You probably have Oct 07 points 160, plus the 160 developer points. Like everyone said, make sure they used the developer points first. Then if you won't be going back again until after Oct 1, bank those Oct 07 points into Oct 08. That will give you 320 points to use from Oct 1, 2008 until Sept 30, 2009. Unless you decide to bank some or all of the Oct 2008 points.

I think I am beginning to understand this. We are looking to buy DVC as soon as our guide will return our call so we can start the process. We are buying into AKV (either 160 or 225 points). We will get an October use year (correct?). We are coming this Christmas (2008) but will only be using the Developer's points.

Here is the question:
Our whole family wants to take a cruise in January 2010. Before I understood use year, I was going to bank my points I get for signing (which now I understand are 2007-is that correct?) into the next year and combine those with the next year to get the cruise. We would have enough points, however, do those original regular points I get when I sign expire in September 2009? If they do, when you book a cruise, when do you use the points? When you cruise or when you book it? Will I be able to use these points for this cruise or not. I hope my question is not confusing!!!

If you get the Oct 2007 points, even if you bank them into 2008, they will expire on Sept 30, 2009. You wouldn't be able to use them for a cruise in Jan 2010. Normally, if they are not banked, they would expire on Sept 30, 2008. That means you have to use them for a stay, not just book it by that date.

For your upcoming Christmas stay: If you use the developer points, you can only make your reservation at 7 months out. Be prepared to stay at SSR or OKW and not AKV because undoubtedly it will already be booked by the time you are able to book it.

That means they are regular '07 points and can be banked NOW if you don't plan to stay prior to October 1st of this year. If you bank them into '08, you will have double the points to use next year, but you MUST use at least as many as you banked, because they can not be banked twice. You can, however, bank the regular '08 points.

Our guide indicated on the phone yesterday that we would have a December UY. (I am assuming Dec '07 to 11-30-08). Is that correct? We bough 225 and got 160 Developer points. I want to book a cruise for DH and myself for this Fall. Can I use the Developer points for that? I want to take my family and inlaws to WDW 12-21 to 12-26 2008. Can I use the 225 for that? I can book those as soon as we get our DVC member number can't I? Do they have to be banked to be used in 12-08 (the 225 regular points)?
