Ok. Booked Thanksgiving trip 2013. I have December use year. Used points from 2012 and borrowed some from 2013. Trip dates Nov. 28 thru Dec 7th. If I had to cancel would the borrowed 2013 points go back to 2013 use year or would they go into 2012 as that is the start of the trip. I only borrowed enough for one night.
Thanks for any help

The borrowed points will remain in your 2012 Use Year if you cancel that reservation. Borrowing and Banking are final transactions. They would need to be used by Nov. 30, 2013. It sounds as though you only had enough points from your 2012 Use Year for two nights of the reservation and needed to borrow enough for one night (November 30, 2012) and then the remaining nights are all from your 2013 Use Year. Only the points borrowed for the one night would stay in the 2012 Use Year. The 2013 points used for the December nights will remain in the 2013 Use Year.

I hope you won't need to cancel.

I'm looking at a similar issue, but for a different holiday. Using this example, if the Thanksgiving trip was cancelled, they would have to us those points for another reservation before December 1, 2013 or they would lose the points totally, right?

Yes, any points returned to the December, 2012 Use Year would need to be used by 11/30/12 or they will expire.

Mickey Mac, adding to the above, with a reservation that late in the use year, it is not just the borrowed points that are at risk if you cancel. You will not be able to bank any 2012 points used for those other two nights in Nov 2013 if you cancel after July 31, 2013, because that is your last day you can bank Dec 2012 points.

Thank you for the replies. I don't intend to cancel and am aware that my Dec. 2012 points need to be used by 11/30/2013. However, I still am confused as to why points borrowed from Dec. 2013 use year for a 2013 trip would not be good thru 11/30/2014???? My confusion stems from my belief that Dec 2013 points are good thru Nov. 2014 right????

Dec 2013 points are good thru Nov. 2014 right????

sure, so long as you leave them in that UY.

if you bank them into dec 2014 UY, they don't expire till nov 30, 2015. you would be disappointed if you banked them into your 2014 UY, yet they still expired on nov 30, 2014, right?

so if you borrow them into your 2012 UY, they expire 11/30/2013...just like other 2012 UY pts.

it's just that once you move pts by banking or borrowing, they cannot be moved again...when you borrow 2013 UY pts into 2012, they are stuck in the 2012 UY.

If you used 2013 UY points for the days of your trip that are in your 2013 UY, then those points are not borrowed points. They would be considered current UY points for that trip and would be valid for stays until November 30, 2014 as you mention. If you used any 2013 UY points for days prior to December 1st, those would be the borrowed ones.

true - UY has nothing to do with when you call to book. so just because you called to book before your 2013 UY starts, does not mean that you "borrowed" those 2013 UY pts.

if you booked the night of dec 1, 2013 with dec 2013 UY pts, those are "current" pts, not "borrowed", based on the date of the stay - when you called doesn't matter.

Perfect I got it! They are not borrowed points. Just when I think I understand all the lingo I confuse myself again!

This statement has me a bit confused. I was under the impression that you had to have enough points, when you are booking, to secure the reservation. If OP was calling prior to when the points were in her account (based on UY), then she'd have to borrow them from the next year. Since her vacation began prior to Dec. 1, 2013, she would not have the UY for 2013 in her account yet. Is what I'm saying correct?

When you bank or borrow points, you morph them to the UY that they were moved into and they are forfeited at the end of the new UY. They cannot be banked or borrowed again and the transactions cannot be reversed.

Selecting a UY based on your typical travel months can help to keep you from forfeiting points should you have to cancel a reservation.

my oct UY 2015 pts are already in my account. i can see them online. the question is whether i can get them into the right UY to use them for a stay.

i can only borrow them forward 1 year - into my oct 2014 UY, starting on oct 1, 2014. i can call 11 months out to book oct 1, 2014 - by calling nov 1, 2013...so for one example, nov 1, 2013 is the earliest i can call to book with borrowed 2015 pts...

if i call on nov 1, 2013 to book oct 1, 2014 using pts from my 2014 UY, those pts are still considered "current" based on the dates of the stay.

when you call has nothing to do with UY. your home resort dictates when you can call.

that is not correct. but it is a common misconception.

here's a great thread for more info:

Everything is based on when the reservation happens. Not when you call and book. Any trip can be "paid" for using banked points from the prior UY, current UY points, and borrowed points for the UY after travel.

So, if I want to travel during my 2014 UY , I can used banked 2013, 2014, and borrowed 2015. I can call and do that as soon as the 11 month window opens for booking that trip.

Thank you. I've read quite a few posts by those who help out frequently.... you all are a great deal of help in understanding all this.

Anyone who needs DCL help, I've got that down- now to learn all DVC things! I've heard it's a work in progress! :goodvibes
