Use Year hatred - I have to get this off my chest

yes, but you have to wait for them to open, Oct Columbus day/F&W goes fast enough that i've had to waitlist often.

believe it's a sign that i need more BW points to have a reserve banked lol

As mentioned just book the first days that start your reservation - the nights of Sept 25-30th and then anytime within the next 3-4 days call MS to add the remainder you need.

My dh is pretty good figuring it out. He has had to call a couple times. I'm hoping he is right on the amount we need for a big family vacation Feb 2020.

That assumes they get the first day. IF they book 24-30 Sept (checking out on 1 Oct for that reservation) their chances of having the reservation locked in are better. Then when they call DVC later, they can drop the day(s) that's not needed.

I totally get it! I think I have it under control and then I find myself thinking ... If we go in 2017, then I'm using 2016. So I can bank 2015 and borrow 2017. So how many points is that? But wait I'm going in 2017. It's 2016, am I too late to bank 2015? Shouldn't I be borrowing from 2018? No wait :scared:.

Wish they would all run on the calendar year. It would keep things so much simpler.

I have two contracts for the second one I made sure to match the use year even if it was more expensive. My use year is April, Feb would be easier but I didn't know things the first time I bought.

But imagine the chaos if everybody's points expired the same month. Yikes!

I understand. I get confused with ours ever since we added on. We own at two different resorts with two different use years (AKV-Oct & BWV - Sept). We travel between November - March so the UY's are ok but would be so much nicer if they were the same. Last year I transferred from one to the other at 7 months to make booking easier. But, when I went to reserve a trip for this year I thought I had transferred AKV points left in my BWV contract that I couldn't use yet at at BWV - luckily I realized that they were still points left in that were BWV points and I was able to book an extra night for this fall while there was still availability at BWV!

We just bought direct and have a Dec UY. We were given the points for 2015 and 2016. I thought I totally understood the process. However, when I booked our first DVC trip for Jan, it used my 2016 points instead of the 2015 points. So I called and she switched it from 2016 to 2015. However, if I don't have a plan for my 2016 points, I need to have them banked by July 31st, or I lose them. I will get this figured out, one way or another.

Yes, you have to bank those 2015 points before you can use them for a trip in your 2016 use year.

We ended up with a Feb UY by happenstance and have been so grateful. I look at the later months and it makes my head spin!

As an aside, it may be because DH just watched Star Wars, but when I first read the title of this thread I thought it said "Use Your Hatred" lol!

I HATE Use-Years. They are annoying as all get out. Our contract is November, and it's a PAIN, PAIN, PAIN that when I see Use Year 2016, I think "Oh... These are my 2016 points. But NNNNOOOO. They are my 2017 points. Sure, they start in the END of 2016, but MOST of the year is good for 11 months in 2017! And those 2017 points? Yeah... they are REALLY 2018 points. Heck it's still my 2015 points that I have all year to use and we're well into almost half of 2016 now!

Sorry... It just confuses me EVERY TIME and I had to get it out.

<Deep Breath>
I know the feeling! We have two contracts - one February and one December. I am struck in the middle of the night every so often with "Ack - are those expiring points!" attacks. I ended up making a colour-coded spreadsheet (blue for Feb contract, Pink for Dec contract, and purple for when the two contracts overlap). It helps me to have a visual reminder of what UY means in practical terms for when I'm booking. My husband wants to combine the points by transferring to one contract and booking everything from there for our upcoming trip, but I believe it doesn't actually matter because the transfer doesn't eliminate the UY attached to the moved-in points, right?

We have December UY also. It is kind of wield but we live in the northeast so we are using them for winter or spring break. Works out ok for us.

I'm ok with the points expiring. Mine is a June use year so I just got my 2016 points.

What I never understood though is the annual dues. When I paid dues in January of 2016 did I pay for the 2016 points or the 2015 points?

Dues are on a calendar year basis. When you pay in Jan 16 and have a June UY you are literally paying for 5 months of the 2015 UY and 7 months of the 16 UY. This is why many people overpay in this area on resales.
