USB on my cricut

Could someone tell me if the USB on my cricut is for templates online? And if so what do I need to use that feature?

it is for connecting with the computer
Design Studios uses it
I think the new craft room will too (I haven't checked it out yet - not sure if I will since I"m a SCAL2 user)
