I know that you great folks could help me out. I keep reading about USAA and I have been to their website a couple of times but cannot seem to get a clear answer on eligibility. Is this open to anyone who has served in the armed forces at one point in their lives?? My boyfriend served for four years in the air force and I'd like to know if he would be eligible to use their services. Does anybody know? Or do you have to be currently serving?

I believe that he may be eligible for some services of USAA. I think possibly just banking though not positive. I understand that you have to be in active duty or guard/reserve when you sign up for their services and then continue with them once you have left the military.

You may be eligible for membership.Active duty officers and enlisted personnel.
National Guard, Selected Reserve officers and enlisted personnel.
Officer candidates in commissioning programs.
Recently retired or separated military personnel.
Children of USAA members.
Former USAA members.

I am not sure if her is eligible or not. The above was copied from the USAA website. And I would guess he would have to call the have then define what "separated military personnel" actually means. Best of luck to your brother.

Yeah i read that and was wondering exactly what separated military personnel meant....i guess a call is in order to find out...

You can use all of their services except their insurance if you are not currently active in the military (but still qualify under the other options). Car loans, credit cards, personal loans, etc.

I'm a member through my dad, who served a year or so during Vietnam (though he never went overseas).

I use their insurance, and my husband was able to get membership through me (and he's not even a US citizen!)

It sounds to me like your boyfriend would be eligible.

I'd check with USAA on that. I thought that as long as my DH is a USAA member, he can get their insurance.

That said, USAA is THE BEST company. We have never, never had a problem with any of our claims -- customer service is awesome.

Thanks everyone, I am going to have him call and check if he is eligible, we have all his paperwork at home so it should be easy to see what they ask for. Thanks again!

I think I had it confused. Previously you could join USAA if you were not military and did not meet any of the requirements, but you couldn't use the insurance. Sorry!

I'm a USAA member and was able to join due to my father's veteran status. I was told though that I was NOT eligible for any USAA insurance though.

I've been a USAA member for a couple of years though and LOVE it!

You can also join if you are an FBI agent. You won't find this anywhere on their site but this is how my DH joined.

I am also a member through my Dad...he was in the Navy in the 70's...and I have Car Insurance, and Renters Insurance. Great RATES...if you were denied insurance if your Dad was in the service, call back and talk to someone else. You do qualify.

We LOVE USAA - but I noticed you mentioned it was your boyfriend. When my dh and I were dating (active duty) his insurance and everything was USAA, but since we were not married or otherwise related it didn't cover me. Once we were married I was added without any problems. So if your boyfriend is eligible for their insurance then the house you are renting/own will have to be in his name.

They're a great company, we've never had a single issue with them no matter what has happened. They've always had our car insurance, home insurance, renters insurance and now they also have the loans on our 2 vehicles. Fabulous customer service.

I can't answer your question specifically, but wanted to add how much I love USAA. I've had my auto insurance through them for over 15 years (my dad is retired AF) and am now married to a soldier, so we also invest and bank through them. They are a great company - we've never had any complaints about them! :thumbsup2

If you can get homeowners thru them, do it! We live in Florida and have our homeowners with them and they are so reasonable!!! I think they may not be writing any new policies, you may want to ask!

Tell him to call and ask. I joined back when I was in the National Guard.

All they can do is tell him no.

I have been a member for proably close to 15 years or so.

They are great.

PM me if you need the number.

Thanks
