to those that are concerned about meds, diaper rash cream, cold med for baby, etc... simply bring enough to use prior to boarding in your purse/carryon and put the remainder in your checked luggage... it's not rocket science... carry as little as possible on board with you (really, what *do* you need? your travel docs and some stuff to keep the kids from getting bored plus diaper changing equipment)... everything else will be waiting for you at the other end...

i.e. for the infant tylenol... put a brand new one in the checked luggage and bring an opened one... does baby before going thru security and you're good to go...

i.e. for butt paste... chuck a little in a ziplock bag, use it at the last diaper change before going thru security and have the rest of the jar in your checked luggage for when you arrive... if you need to change a diaper before getting to your resort, go grab your luggage rather than having the DME folks do it...

prescription meds... put all of one or two day's worth in a script bottle w/your name on it and put the rest in the monday/tuesday/wednesday containers in your checked luggage... bring a list of your meds and doses w/you in the event your checked luggage gets lost so you can have a local pharmacy get you replacements...

it's a total pita but it can be done smoothly if everyone cooperates...

My problem is the airlines are rarely all that careful with your luggage and flight delays do happen. There are some things that are *needed*, not to mention, security is supposed to be a nightmare which translates to long lines. If I dose the baby just before getting on the plane I am generally sure (or as sure as I'm going to be) we'll be taking off in about 30 minutes or so. The medication has time to kick in and will still be effective during the descent. If I dose her before going through security, we're talking two to three hours before take off. That won't accomplish much. Further, if we land where our luggage is not we may have a real problem.

I'm all for security as long as it's necessary. It seems some of this may be, dare I say it, reactionary more than precautionary. We could make everyone fly naked with nothing at all on their person, then we'd all be *really* safe.

Lastly - there is NO WAY I'm checking a laptop in luggage that cannot be locked. Things are stolen from bags everyday and little has been done to crack down on it. It's advertised all over not to put film in checked luggage as it will be ruined. So, you've got to bring your film/camera with you. There is a lot more to this than simply saying, "ok, I won't bring anything."

WHy do people insist on trying to break the rules? There was a terror plot aimed at blowing up 7-13 airplanes, so what at a minimum 1500 people. And they were planning to do it by bringing liquids on board. Don't you think the terrorists consider the profiles of folks flying and consider putitng it in liquid medicine bottles, especially kid medicines?

Why do you think you are more important than the safety of the rest of the flying public?

Get through security, but what you need for your child at the little ddrugstores they ahve there, dose your child before boarding, and then toss what's left.

Or try chewables, melatables, and add them to airline supplied drinks.

Ok, chill out. I was kidding. A 14 month old can't have chewables or meltables as they are not dosed for kids that size...

BBC news are still reporting that not just nappies, but creams and wipes are allowed as hand luggage.

I can't help but think if a terrorist was willing to blow him/herself up they would certainly be willing to "taste" some of the 'liquid' ......

The powdered lemonade and Crystal lite drink packets are going to sell-out at the grocery stores!!

Many medications are not supposed to be stored at high temperatures... make-up melts and many creams sunscreen turn runny in high heat ... Buying "new" items may work when you travel domestically but internationally it is much harder to find items...

What a nightmare because there are some crazed idiots intent on hating us forever.....

While I understood that you were kidding, it really isn't something to joke about. I'm sure that many people will be trying to get stuff through security and that will make their jobs harder and our lines longer.

I was wondering about this. The belly of the plane is not temp. controlled so it's really cold there. Before being placed into the plane the stuff will be on a hot tarmac. Isn't that bad for medication? We're talking extreme temperatures - above 90 degrees and below freezing.

I intend to fly with liquid paracetamol for my son's ears in Oct. If the ban is still in place, I will go to my GP and get a letter to allow it. Again, news is reporting that ANY medication (not tablet form) is accepted providing there is a medical letter suporting it. I am sure even paracetamol or other over counter medicine, particularly with kids will be included in this. This type of medication is essential for a lot of people as a main form of pain relief, so I am sure it will be allowed on board with a medical letter.

perhaps you can ask your pediatrician for sample sizes of the infant tylenol? i know mine used to have shelves full... that way you could have a sealed package to take thru security, dose the baby at the gate and toss the open, partially used, free, bottle... have another new one in your checked luggage for the trip home...

re: flying naked... could be a problem... the seatbelt might cause a rash for some and be itchy for others... :rotfl:

Ok, how long do you all think this will last? Not until September right? You know this is definately why we need to find the terrorists that are a threat, and close the borders to everyone trying to get in this country. I'm just so pissed.

I'm sure that 99.9% of us will NOT be traveling to a remote area where there are no essential neccessities to be had.............so therefore, just buy what you need like, OTC meds, diaper rash creams, sunscreen, film, etc. , when you arrive at your destination. Especially, if you're concerned of the high temp of the cargo area of the plane.

Anyone know if ice packs are allowed in your carry-on? I have to take a probiotic (which is not a prescription) or I get violently sick to my stomach, and the probiotics must be kept cold so I was going to take a collapsible cooler with an icepack and my pills. Well this will definitely put a crimp in the plans of everyone using Magical Express! They actually tell you to put your toiletries in your carry-on because luggage may not come for some time. So much for going to the pool when we arrive, we won't have any sunblock and I refuse to pay a fortune for it in Florida. Stupid terrorists!

Wow. :sad2:

I am going to be flying in December, so hopefully things have calmed down by then. I am flying a red eye and like to "freshen up" before heading down to the DME bus. Otherwise I will probably just pick up my own luggage and use a bathroom downstairs, I suppose! I feel so fortunate they caught those involved with the terrorist threat before it was realized, this could have been worse than 9/11 if they really hijacked that many planes! While I am sure everone thinks these new precautions are a PITA, I personally feel that they have the responsibility to do what they need to do in order to keep everyone safe. I would guess this is semi-temporary, but am just so glad they are doing something about it now!

Now I know where the money I saved on buying park and airline tickets early is going...to buy all the non-essentials at Disney prices (not renting a car.)

DH and I travel alot internationally--buying shampoo or sunscreen in many foreign cities would have cost a fortune. (Actually I did have to buy feminine products in Alaska once and it cost 4 times as much as at home!)

Perhaps all this will have the airlines clamp down a little on the size of some carry-ons. I've seen carry-ons that are larger than my main suitcase! I am really concerned about not being able to take a reasonably sized carry-on with medication (I use mail-order and the original bottles are BIG, camera and even some jewelry. There is little security and things get stolen.

www.spwipes.com

they are sunblock wipes, come in a sealed pouch, each one individually... they work great, are easy to carry, not messy to use...

also you can have items shipped to your resort in advance if you are concerned...

Still more information coming out: Apparently the plot was going to be on 9 planes. There was going to be three waves of three planes being exploded at one time. US homeland security have said 5 major US cities were to be involved in this, but didn't say in what way. Apparently this was going to happen "imminently", within the next few days. SCARY.

I think I heard transatlantic flights hold about 300 people. 300x9 = 2700. Yikes, kinda puts things into perspective.

Pets and other animals (as well as plenty of other temp-sensitive cargo) are shipped in the cargo hold of planes.

Anyone heard about inhalers? I have never had to use it on the plane, but I would rather have it than not.

Inhalers should be covered under the medical needs section of the new regulations. Please have a perscription with it.

Someone a few pages back mentioned that chapstick was not allowed. I have been advised by my doctor to keep my lips moisturized at ALL times (yes, really, I get very chapped & painful lips if I don't). I plan on flying to Disneyland in November (hopefully it won't still be like this then, but who knows). Do you think it would be okay if I bring a doctor's note and a brand new sealed package of chapstick (it's actually a gel type)?

Edited to say: I'm flying from Newark to LAX so that would be roughly 6 hours. It's not a short flight.

All medications should be carried in original labeled containers. This was the case even before this event.

To everyone who is travelling, please double check you carry on baggage and reduce the contents as much as possible. If there is any doubt on whether it will or will not be allowed in a carry on - make sure to pack in it your checked baggage. PLEASE, do not give the TSA agents/flight crew/gate agents a hard time about these new rules!!! It is not their fault. It is the fault of these d@mn terrrorists!

I have to travel on Sunday and I am not happy about having to check my bag (including my laptop) but I understand that it is a necessary rule in order to protect the safety of all!!!
Couldn't agree more! :thumbsup2 I wish that they would make 2 lines. Line #1 People who are just going to do what they are told and not try to ask 500 questions. Line #2 People who want to try to get any little thing on the plane that they can no matter how much time it takes and how long others have to wait behind them.

Unless you are litterally not going to survive without an item, it sounds like you should leave it in your checked bags to make things easier for everyone!
