The airlines are not doing anything. The government, in all its infinite wisdom, has made this decision (remember when tweezers were going to be used to bring down a plane?). The problem is, no matter how much you ban, there will always be something else. What's going to happen now is an airline collapse. An industry that posted its first positive quarter in many years is taking a tremendous hit today - I suppose the bright side is the Fed won't raise the rate at the next meeting. Who is going to fly with these restrictions in place longterm? In Britain they are now saying you can bring accepted items through security in a ziploc bag. Everything else needs to go into checked luggage. How long before the US adopts the same regulations? Of course, whether or not it will make you safer remains to be seen.

We have to TRY! Obviously, unless you have the mind of a monster, you aren't going to be able to think of every possible scenario, but we have to react when we are threatened and we have to be proactive to try to reduce the threat. This is not going to go away. This is our reality and we have to do whatever it takes. If we are inconvenienced -- oh well!

Millions of people around the world believe we are the terrorists.
The events post 9/11 have not done anything to change that opinion. We have blown up tens of thousands of innocent civilians and provided the bombs for other countries to do the same. Until it stops we will always be in danger. Violence begets violence.

I'm not going to turn this board and topic into a political debate, but what you wrote is pure hogwash. Puhlease.

I travelled by air early this morning and it amazes me how inconsiderate and stupid people were. Is a bottle of water worth losing your life? People were actually telling security that they had no right to tell them what they could not bring on board. Saw one guy arrested. He so deserved it. The banned items will remain in place I think for quite awhile, until screening systems can pick up on dangerous substances. Small electronices and cell phone are only banned in the UK I was able to get on board with my ipod and phone. However every bag is being checked. Try to travel light. I was amazed at what people carry with them. My advice: If you can survive your flight with out it temporarily put in your checked luggage, if you don't really need it leave it home

Man, we're flying out tomorrow from Newark to Disney for 2 weeks. I was going to leave work at 4 for a 6:20 flight. Guess that's not happenin'....

I can just picture what state my twin 5 year olds will be in after 5 hours in the security line

We leave in a week and a half and I's bummed about the no drinks rule. I would normally have at least three drinks with me as I am constantly thristy, as well as some juice boxes for the kids. And I don't want to be bothering the FA all the time. I would think this rule will relax in time...but probably not by next weekend. I don't even mind buying after security, I just want to bring drinks on the plane...

So much hate...

This thread is out of control.

Put liquids (cosmetic items) in your checked bag. Allow extra time to pass through security.

Also allow extra time on arrival as well to retrieve your luggage. The airlines will have more checked luggage than usual.

This summer was predicted to be the busiest of all time, so bring your patience as well.

As a person who in the 1990's had the job of securing international flights these regulations are aimed at making travel as safe as possible. I am very impressed with the actions taken this morning and am impressed at how good communication was between the UK, US and security agencies domestic and international. These are huge improvements.

If you are traveling have patience with TSA their job just got a lot more complicated.

Please pack all toiletry items including makeup and lipstick and chapstick in your checked bags it will make it so much easier at the airport.

I doubt these regulations will be gone over the weekend since we are still taking off our shoes due to the "Shoe Bombers" actions.

Safe travels to all.

your post brought to mind a recent newspaper photo i saw... it had protestors carrying placards that said "bombing for peace is like f*ck*ng for virginity" sad but true...

nice. nothing like an f bomb to end a thread.

1) It is tough to understand all the complaining.
2) Air travel is not a RIGHT, it is a PRIVILEGE.
3) In such, the rules are the rules.
4) A little inconvenience is better than the alternative.
5) Give me the new rules versus a bomb on board.
6) I survived a major DC-9-30 crash, and won't temp the air gods again.

7) There are options for the complainers
. . . ship the items early, such as UPS or FEDEX
. . . place the items in the checked luggage
. . . if neither is desired or acceptable, take a car-bus-boat

NOTE: I am sorry if this sounds harsh or uncaring, but after more than two-million air miles it is tough to show sympathy to the whiners. People don't NEED chapstick, bottled water, soda, dvd's (although I do like mine), computers to get from one airport to another. I am sure if you ask a Marine in Iraq his/her feelings, they would say to adhere to the rules. People are dying, so I don't think a few hours in the air without some luxuries will hurt any of us.

I'm certainly not whining, but I hope that there is an eventual middle ground on this issue - maybe some common sense? I'm not too concerned about my 2 hour flight to Orlando, but we are traveling to Korea (to pick up our new son!!!) in October and I am somewhat concerned about carry-ons. I hope that the restrictions will allow me to pack enough to keep a 5 yr. old boy (who speaks Korean) occupied. I've heard rumors this morning about cutting out all carry-ons. I think that would show a lack of common sense, and would make my trip home extremely difficult. I have a lot of empathy for those of you traveling from the UK with children and no carry-ons.

Also, of course I want TSA to screen everyone carefully and I want to be safe, but there is so often a lack of respect and common sense on their part. Sometimes they are downright mean and I think some of them enjoy their perceived power a little too much. (With the exception of the Atlanta airport - they were great!)

My main concern is that this event will force all of us to suffer unnecesarily. And I'm not talking about suncreen and make-up. A long flight w/o a water bottle or toys for the kids seems a little ridiculous at least in the long term.

Hubbie just told me he was listening BBC Radio 1 on the way home tonight. Apparently a group of people from Glasgow said they were unable to get their flight today to London to attend Madonna's concert. They had hired a minivan and were driving down instead, but weren't sure they would make it in time to the start. They asked the DJ if he could put a plea out to her to delay the start time :rotfl2:

Funny thing is, she rang the show back and said "no problem, the show will start 8.30-9pm instead" :lmao: :lmao:

Apparently she is good friends with the DJ, and I suppose she realised there would probably be quite a few people late due to all the travel disruptions. Pretty nice of her.

I, too, am very impressed with the work in the UK and the international communication. Proactive rather than merely reactive.

Unfortunately, the terrorists have "won" if even in a small way---for what is a terrorists if not to instill terror and chaos.

As a society we have become so very spoiled...as my husband loves to say "the Bedouins traveled with all that they owned on their backs".

I personally think the terrorists have already won, causing us to sacrifice our comfort and travel-ease. I do not think that we deserve this, but the reality is that innocent people are being killed by the US as well and we have to be prepared to face similar realities when we are at war.

I am completely bummed to not be able to take basic needs, like water and liquid meds, on a plane. I hope that there is a better way to counter this threat.

I am forced to take planes overseas for business purposes sometimes... so I don't have the option of just "taking a boat." I have a fear of flying, and the only thing that calms me down is music. So it's a necessity for me to take it on the plane. Who are you to tell me otherwise? If you're so concerned about the Marines, why don't you go join them?

Sorry THIS sounds harsh, but I have a problem with people telling me how to think.

I don't get "offended", but, as I said, I would expect the thread to get locked up soon as a result of that suggested profanity as well as the *off-topic* trend of the thread. As for the profanity, come on, this is the DIS. It won't be tolerated, and that was my point. Moreover, it has little, if anything to do with Theme Park Stategies! :teeth:

Sorry yes meant checked I was on the phone at the time I Posted discussing this about carryons

Get used to it folks. I think this will be the new normal.
I laugh when I hear people complain that they cannot bring their lattes on board - so the terrorists have won.
This whole thing really saddens me. Our world is changing and we need to get used to it. I happen to live on the same street as one of the alleged terrorists here in Toronto. It is sickening. I do not want my children to grow up with these threats. It so very sad....

Bringing it back to themeparks, can you imagine traveling to Hong Kong Disney or anywhere overseas? I realize many people do not have international travel experience on this board, but I have been stuck in Calcutta for 3 days without my luggage and there is NOWHERE to buy stuff. If I didn't have the stuff in my bag, I would have been screwed. I had an infection on my arm that had to have triple antibiotic applied all the time and since they don't really have prescriptions there I obviously didn't have them.
