Could someone please tell me how old kids are when they enter the 9th and 10th grade?

14 and 15, normally. Depends on the birthdate of the child, though. They could start 9th grade at 13 if their birthday is in the fall.

Fourteen for 9th and fifteen for 10th. :)

14-15 years old.

DD is in 9th grade and turned 14 last summer.

O.k. Thanks. It´s the same as here then. DS turns 14 in a couple of weeks and is in 9th grade.

My DD entered 9th grade this year -- she turned 14 in mid-August and started 9th grade 2 weeks later. So, she'll be 15 when she starts 10th grade. But she is the youngest in her class, so that means a 9th grader can also be 15 and a 10th grader can be 16. Our cutoff here in PA is September 1st.

It depends on what the birth-date cut-off is for the local school jurisdiction. Our school system's cut-off is October 1st, so kids born that date or later HAVE to go to school with kids born the next year.

For instance, say you have a December baby, born in 1992. She goes to school with kids who are born in 1993 (up to the October 1st cut-off date). Kids *used* to be able to go to school here with their year-group with birth-dates up to December 31st, but then you have some who are really one year older than their peers. (But that was changed a while back to our present October 1st date.) Then some parents hold their kids back for one reason or another, so you can have kids in a class where they are *really* one year older.

That was a long explanation, sorry about that. The short answer is that US 9th Graders are generally 14(& turning 15) and 10th graders are generally 15 (& turning 16).

agnes!

My dd just started 9th grade. She was 13 when the year started and just turned 14 this month. Her Science teacher did a graph yesterday to see the youngest to oldest child in the class. DD was very upset because she was the very youngest. They were all making fun of her and telling her she should only be in 8th grade. Almost all the kids were 15 or turning 15 pretty soon. She started school in MI and the cut off I think was November and here in IL I think it is Aug.

It doesn't matter where you set the date, someone will always be the youngest and someone will always be the oldest. Some will like the cut off and others won't. It is impossible to please all the people over the subject.

Color me confused. I don't think anyone was complaining over the cut off date.:confused3 OP asked what age kids here in the US are going into the 9th and 10th grade.

Ds was 14 when he started 10th grade, will not be 15 for 3 more weeks and is one of those "youngest in class" Most of his friends are 16 already.

we are in Illinois and kids must be 14 by Sept 1 for 9th grade. However, holding your kids back seems to be a BIG preference here....my son knows some kids who have May bdays and were "red-shirted" ( parents choice to hold back), so they were 15 in May, and will be 16 just before school ends in June. It is a big gap for my kid who turned 14 end of August and went. There can and usually is a wide range of ages in each grade level. Some hold back for maturity , some so their kids can br physically larger for sports etc., some are for what may apply to you, their home has different ages...one boy is from Croatia and they start ( or at least he did) kindergarted a year later, 6-7, so he is older, but started when he was supposed to back there and then when they moved here, he went to his correct grade for him, not according to Illinois age.
