US Coins: rolling?

Really, this IS trip planning!!

You'd be amazed how many US coins we can collect in our everyday (Canadian) change. It's worth about 25% more, but most Cdn's don't bother sorting it out. We do, though!! We have a jar of it, and I've tried rolling it, but it doesn't fit (nickels, dimes & quarters) in my plastic wrappers. US coins seem to be thicker than ours. So...to my question: how much do you roll in one wrapper? Here we put $2 in a nickel wrapper, $5 in a dime & $10 in a quarter. I can get paper wrappers at the bank, but want to make sure I'm doing the right amounts.

Oh...and our banks won't take them, so I'll cart them down to the wonderful CM's at check-in...last time they took $10 worth unrolled in mixed coins!! (This time we have over $30!)

I am amazed that you accumulate Cdn change! I know none of the machines take it (like pop machines, etc). And, thanks for the offer to trade but I think I'm getting a better deal!!

Many US banks will run change through a machine to count it and give you cash. I never roll my change. Just a thought.

Banks will often run it through a machine and give you paper cash for free. There's also a cool little gizmo called "Coinstar" that is available at a lot of grocery stores. You dump the coins in, it prints a receipt and you trade for paper money. Unlike the banks Coinstar does make you pay (can't remember how much, a couple cents on the dollar) but it's WAYYYY better than rolling all those coins and it's goofy fun to go in there with a bag of change and watch the screen as it counts it up - after making bets in the family about how much it is, of course . The screen tells you how many of each coin there is and you can just watch those totals go up..

I'm not sure if it's a "standard" rate nationwide, but when I was looking at Coinstar's here in Pittsburgh, they were all 9c on the dollar. So for every $100 you dump in, they keep almost $10 of it..

I decided to spend $15 on a automatic coin sorter. I dump in my pocket of coins at night and it automatically dumps them in their tubes. I take them to the bank when I aquire ~100 worth.

It doesn't seem worth it to me to let them have 10% of my coin (no pun intended ), especially when I have to take time out to go to a Coinstar, wait for it to process it and then take it to the counter. I just take my rolled coins after I aquire enough as I'm at the bank once a week anyhow.

Of course, i'm really cheap too I'd rather spend the $10 on more Disney stuff for my home

If your planning on doing laundry will @ Disney - you may want to save some of those quarters for that.

I like the coin sorter idea--I may go buy one myself. Today my bank wouldn't exchange my change and I had to find a coinstar machine. We save our change for Disney in our "Disney Pig"...but we renamed him the "New Porker" for our trip to New York this weekend. Next week he goes back to being our Disney Pig.

I think they may only be located in the Northeast, but Commerce Bank has a free coin counter in the lobby called the Penny Arcade. You can use it without even having a bank account. You drop all of your change in, it counts it, and gives you a paper receipt. Bring that to any teller to exchange for cash. Quick and easy - and no 9 cent per dollar fee like those Coinstar machines!
