US Airways - 1st Class What To Expect if Anything

I haven't flown US Air in more than 10 years. We always fly Southwest. My friend and I are both turning 50 in the next few months and her husband offered us his points and a week at their timeshare to celebrate. We are flying first class which neither of us has ever done.

So, we are both wondering what we should expect, if anything. We know we get to check in our luggage for free and get to board early. We understand there is free drinks. Our question...what can we expect in the drink offerings? We see pop, wine, and beer. Can we get any mixers at all (such as iced tea/vodka, etc.)? Also, we fly at 8:30 am so what sort alcohol would they serve that early? Do they limit you to a certain number of drinks or would we just get one drink?

Our flight originates in Buffalo and heads to Charlotte. So we are not expecting anything but drinks due to the short flight. However, we know there will be a meal or snack from there to Vegas. Does anyone have any ideas of what they serve for lunch?? Trying to figure out if we would be better grabbing a sub from Subway from the terminal for the long flight.

It's my understanding they stop all in-flight movies, etc. domestically as of Nov. 1. Bummer! I will pack my portable DVD player instead. Anything else we should be aware of?

Any input would be appreciated. Looking forward to our first trip flying first class. What a great way to start our 50th Birthday Celebration Trip!

You will get free luggage & board first. You can get any kind of alcoholic beverage free.

That November 1 for IFE is probably a couple of years ago, it's been gone for a long time. Unlike other airlines who serve drinks in first class in glasses, US uses plastic like in coach. I've found their leg room not to be that great, especially if the person in front of you fully reclines.

From BUF to CLT, they will pass the snack basket. Cookies, chips, peanuts, pretzels.

From CLT to LAS for lunch it will probably be a choice of sandwich or salad with a dessert. They will also pass the snack basket later.

The US Airways website might tell you what they'll be serving you for lunch. Might. You could call and ask, as well.

One other advantage to flying First Class - your luggage comes off the plane first ;)

Be aware that if there are 12 first class seats, they will have 6 of each meal choice. So if you are in the third row, you might not have a choice. That happened to me one time, the choice was omlet or yogurt. I was in the third row and wanted the omlet, got the yogurt. So when I booked my award ticket for next May, I picked 2C, that way I would be guaranteed my choice (they start at 1A).

The luggage does get tagged as priority but I've found that to be hit or miss, especially with a connection. You can also use the first class check-in line and security line (if your airport has one).

CLT is a great airport with a large food court. I would get something to go from one of the many food establishments rather than eat a salad or sammie on board that was probably made 24 hours ago and has been sitting in a steel meal cart waiting to be loaded on a plane. The drinks are free flowing and you can order any and as many as you want. Las Vegas flights tend to be party flights so you will be surrounded by others indulging in adult beverages.
