I can't seem to find this info. If I book with US Air, can I choose my seat ahead of time. I am seeing passengers with status can, but can a passenger without status get advance seating or is it at check in?

Yes, you can get advance seat assignments on US Air without status as long as there are non-preferred seats available for assignment.

Do you get to choose your seats when you purchase and is there a cost?

Yes, you can select seats at the time of purchase and there is no charge for assignments in non-preferred locations. You may or may not be able to get preferred seats (usually aisle/window seats in the front of the cabin and exit row seats) at an addtional cost; some airlines have that available but I don't fly US Air often enough to know how they do it.

We flew US Airways from Charlotte to Orlando last yr and yes you can select the seats yourself and also the preferred seats are just behind first class at the front of coach. We paid $10 extra for the preferred last yr.

Just be aware that US Air's customer service is abysmal. We paid $25 each for preferred seats in December, and the gate agent changed our seats without asking us to accomodate other passengers (she was moving people all over the place, and then calling the passengers she displaced to the podium to receive their new seat assignments), and moved us 22 rows from where we originally had tickets. When we questioned it, she threatened to bump us from the flight altogether.

All you're getting when you buy a ticket, whether you pay to choose a seat or not, is a seat on the plane - not necessarily the one you're choosing.

Seems like all the flights down to MCO are overflowing. When we were waiting to board people were trying to get on our flight that had other times but our gate agent politely said we're full but if we have no shows we'll get you on. We purchased our tickets about 10 months out when the plane was empty and if they would have threatened to bump us I would have took it with some comp and took another flight albeit in Clt we had the luxury of 6 or 7 other flights down we could have jumped on.

Honestly, US Air is not one of my favorite choices, but I will fly them if I can't find a better fare.....
