Upsetting experience at Vero Beach

Unfortunately you will find rude people occasionally no matter where you go. She certainly doesn't speak for the vast majority of americans, but sadly there still are racists...or countryists? Just like the people jumping on your number of posts don't speak for the majority of DISers., but sadly there are people that look first at the number of posts by a user to decide whether to be an ****** or not.

I have to respectfully disagree with your post and pot shot at another dis-board member. It appears you have a small number of posts but for those of us who have been here more than a decade have seen a very sad trend over the last few years of some childish people who love to start posts simply to watch people rant. Usually a sure fire way to at least suspect this is to see the number of posts a person has. Obviously if a person has less than 5 posts and posts a comment about a inflammatory subject or incident it is not unusual to question that and in no way should the person questioning this be considered a jerk (you used a less flattering word of course) unless they use unkind words. In this case the poster stated they didn't understand how a 16 Year DVC member that obviously knows about the DISBoard has just now posted. I think it was perfectly reasonable and probably more than one person was thinking this. We all want to keep legitimate questions and comments going but no one wants to have actual trolls ruining it for those who wish to share their experiences. Some people are just trying to keep it honest! :disrocks:

Since the OP explained why they did indeed have a small number of posts in that they said they had to re-register for some reason it seems reasonable that this is a legitimate post (albeit a sad one). The OP didn't seem the least bit offended by the comment and I thought the poster questioned this respectfully.

To the OP
I am really sorry that you had a less than magical incident at Vero. We are headed there in a few weeks and will be bringing our umbrella. This will remind me to be mindful of where we put it. Regardless it was rude and hateful and not representative of most Americans.

Hope you have a magical rest of your trip!

There are rude people everywhere, in every country.

When I encounter rudeness in Europe, I don't think it means every European is rude.

It's pretty much the same deal here.

I don't believe you are supposed to move the paid for chairs after they are setup. And the people might have paid for the same chair for the entire week. I guess I would be bothered myself if I was paying for a chair and some other people came and setup right in front of me with an umbrella. Having said that though there was no excuse for their rudeness. If I had been the people paying for the chairs and folks setup in front of me, I would have gone and found a CM and asked them to move my chair or ask the other people to move. I can see both sides, but not the rudeness.

Well, maybe I let the cumulative effect of reading several days worth of rude posts where someone throws out the "well, you only have (blank) number of posts, so stop complaining" when someone has something negative to say about anything, and of course coming across a similar response so soon in a thread like this was the last straw...but I do think it is less than welcoming when the number of posts made (never mind that a lot of people lurk for years before starting to post) is used to validate opinions (as you do in your as well..which I bolded). People can post for years and still be "jerks," and it appears to be happening a lot. You may disagree, but I don't consider that response to be "keeping them honest."

Here is a hint, if you think a post or a thread is a Troll looking to start something...don't respond...you don't feed them, they go away. But posting a comment calling the OP out for having few posts can only do two things (1) make a legit member, new or old, feel unwelcome or insulted...or (2) open a big bag of Purina Troll Chow (now with Gravy and Beefy Chunks!) if it was a fake post.

IMO the OP was posting about rude, unwelcoming behavior and was greated to a little bit lesser degree to the same here. Good job!:thumbsup2

But sure, less than 200 posts even after years of lurking, so my opinion may not be valid to you.

But that is one of the issues with the paid chairs - they come in a line fairly high up on the beach due to the tide. As the beach gets crowded at low tide, people WILL move in front of you - if the beach is crowded, they don't have a choice. If you are lucky, the beach won't be crowded and there will be room for everyone - a little less lucky and the people who are in front of you are beach blanket with no umbrella folks. In July, at Vero, the beach WILL be crowded, it will be crowded both with tourists (more likely to use the paid for chairs) and locals (who sometimes will arrive with an SUV packed full of umbrellas, chairs, blankets, coolers, beach toys, etc. to spread over the beach).

I am sorry this happened to you, but I have to say if I was visiting the UK and someone was rude to me, I would never think it had to do with some anti-American hatred and more about that particular person.

Regardless of where you are, even in your home town, you will find rude people.

I'm sorry you felt insulted. I again don't think it was unreasonable to question why a poster posted a very negative experience as one of their first posts. If you are a lurker it is reasonable to ask questions first before posting inflammatory experiences wouldn't you say. And since the OP didn't get offended I really don't see why you would be.....

Trolling is a problem but most of us want to help people on the boards. I went to this post because I have a trip planned at Vero in a few weeks. If this was a troll I just wasted time. If not I just got new information to make sure I don't set up camp in front of the paid chairs. It is hard to know for sure so asking in a not so rude way may simply ensure that people help in the situation and not ignore a legitimate problem or certainly a question. To be honest I almost didn't respond to the post because I too had a concern that this was going to spiral into a Americans are Rude post. I was very glad the OP explained why she had only 2 posts. It seems she is now having a great time and I have learned something for my trip! Win WIN! :goodvibes

So from the original post and responses, I can see there is a woman with a really bad Karma boomerang in her near future and that there are those who want to see rude posters increase their activity until they reach an acceptable number of posts.......
Really sorry for the OPs experience and wish them a magical remainder of their trip.
Drew

I am more annoyed with posters who try to get their numbers up by saying I have no idea or experience with your question but have to post!

I agree with this post. I also agree that the beach gets crowded and it may be necessary.
We are a couple that bring CVS chairs and a beach umbrella (and pay them forward to another family when we leave) to the beach. BUT we walk WAY up the beach away from the rented chairs to not block others view.
I haven't been in July, so maybe it can't be done then, but I can understand being concerned with someone sitting right in front of you.

That said, OP, there is NO EXCUSE for the way you were spoken to and treated. I am very sorry this happened to you.
Please believe that all Americans are not this way
