Upset stomach after jogging

I was asked this question and wonder if anyone has any helpful information. I thought there was a mention of this somewhere, but I cannot remember where this was discussed.

When I jog over 6 miles my stomach starts to get upset and I worry if I will finish before reaching a restroom. Thankfully I have made it each time, so far. I think spend the next 2hrs after jogging waiting for my stomach to settle, in and out of the restroom. This past weekend my stomach settled after 3hrs, but it was still 'upset' for 24hrs after my jog. I have heard of it being known as something called 'runners struts' or something like that but can't find anything on the internet about it. I am at the point of making an appt with my general dr to see if he can give me anything to help with it. Any ideas?
I think as I recall that it may have something to do with being dehydrated, not enough salt, or virus maybe?

Lily one of the advantages of being a walker is we can eat and go. A runner on the other hand must let a meal settle for quite a while before they can run. A light snack like a bagel or a cliff bar might be ok for some but for others no.

When I was a runner I needed at least 2 hours after a meal before I could run. The worst was fried food. A good ole fried chicken dinner would have me sick as a dog after about 3 miles of my stomach bounceing along.

As a walker I can get up from an omlet, sasuage patties and hashbrowns and do a 20 mile LSD and feel great. For racing a bowl of cherrios and and a banana are all I can handle.

So the answer after all that is to look at what you are eating and how soon before the run are you eating it.

I've had similar problems too and have to agree with Dave about the food. I actually watch what I eat the day before I go running because some foods like beef tend to sit in my stomach and it feels like a lead weight. Actually one of the few things I can eat before a run are raisin toast and some honey. But I still end up waiting about an hour or so before I head out. Some of my other friends have trouble with artificial sweetners and caffiene.

Other things I've read on the issue seem to be a build of up of lactic acid can make some people feel nauseous.

As a gastric bypass patient, there isn't anything that I have found yet that works for me. I have gone to carb loading the day before any long run and I never eat the morning that I run. Even sports drinks don't work. I just carry water on the run now. I did my best 16 mile run last weekend on just water and an empty stomach. It was the best because of the time and I didn't have the stomach issues that have plagued every run I have had over 8 miles. That may not be the best answer but it has been the only one in 2.5 years that has worked for me.

Thanks for your replies so far. I know everyone is different in how our bodies handle things. I also read about recording everything you've eaten even a couple of days before to see if there might be a connection.

It is definitely a good thing to try to work on this before the event and know what you cannot consume along the course.
