UPS Freak-out! Delivered or Not Delivered?

Well, I just wasted 1 1/2 hours of my life! I was checking my on-line orders and saw that my DD's Aeropostale' order had been delivered yesterday
(12/06/10) at 10:50 a.m. I was home all day, but UPS has been known to knock and leave instead of ringing the doorbell. Plus, they had made a delivery from another vendor in the afternoon. So, the hunt began! Front porch, side porch, by the garage. It was nowhere to be found!

Well the e-mails began to fly to UPS and Aeropostale', reporting that the boxes were delivered but not to me. And there was a second delivery that was "delivered" today (12/07/10) at 9:30 a.m. What?

Well, the doorbell rings and there is my maillady with my Aeropostale' order! Since when does USPS deliver for UPS? I don't care as long as it gets delivered, but don't put on the UPS tracking site that it was delivered to my home when it wasn't!

That is happening more and more with UPS now. And even FedEx.

They carry the package to the destination city post office, and then the post office delivers it the next day.

Drives me crazy too! It adds on an extra day to the shipping.

I am guessing it saves money though, and is just something we as buyers need to deal with now.

The tracking number for packages like that read something like "tendered to post office" when it reaches your city.

Yes, but usually when you get your tracking info it says something like UPS mail innovations.

I've had this happen ALOT with my Amazon Prime deliveries whenever they ship it via FedEx. They word it differently though -- something like Fedex Smart Post. What ends up happening is exactly what you experienced -- the delivery date and time is the date and time that they passed the package off to the USPS (postal service).

I've not yet had this happen for packages shipped via UPS. I really hate this. I live in the middle of nowhere and the mail service is NOT reliable and frequently is delayed by days.

DH has been tracking a package and yesterday it said that it was in Rochester, which is great because that's where we are but today it says it's in Wisconsin. so who knows. hopefully it shows up soon.

We were at WDW from 11/13-11/19. When we returned home I ordered my Photopass 8X10 photo of the 7 dwarfs & family. Tracking says it was shipped out Nov. 24th, arrived at the Pittsburgh facility on Nov. 27th. We have not received it yet. Luckily I didn't order the Christmas cards. I sent an e-mail & then my DH called. Disney said if we don't receive it by Dec 14th they will send another photo out with better tracking.

You are exactly right...it's Smart Post and it's not exactly the smartest system I've known. I'm a consultant for a scrapbooking/stamping company and we've just switched over to using Smart Post for some of our things. It was not a seamless transition. I guess they're trying to keep the USPS in business?

This has happened to me so many times, but when they hand it off to USPS it usually says "being delivered by local mail facility" or once it actually said USPS (this was an order from Crocs).

I agree the smartpost thing is a PITA.

The problem is the big shipping companies like UPS and Fedex were never meant to deliver to residences so they lose money on those deliveries. They make their money delivering lots of packages to one address. It seems they are now working with the post office to help them with the residential deliveries that the post office is set up to do but has been losing money because the big companies had taken so much of that business.

Now if only my post office would get their head out of their butt. Yesterday they had a package for me that they claimed to leave a delivery slip for because it needed a signature. In reality they never bothered to attempt delivery and no signature was ever needed. Last week they crushed my package to get it to fit in my mailbox. I guess getting out of their car and walking two steps to my door is too much for them. lol

Its has been happening here for years. It does normally say on the tracking information that the local postal service has it. We live in the country off a private road and if USPS is delivering and its too big to fit in our mailbox we have to pick it up at the Post Office.

Now that makes no sense. Why pay delivery charges if the package does not get delivered? It is called a delivery service not a pick up service. All I can say is it must be nice to be able to be lazy and not do your job 100% but still get paid for it and get a pension and good benefits to boot.

I had this happen with my last Amazon order (USPS).

Tracking indicated it had been delivered...but to another town.

I called my local post office and they said it was delivered to the wrong place and I'd be getting it the next day.

Happily, it was in my mailbox.

With more people ordering online it's going to be more common.

I had this happen recently with a QVC order, I had been tracking a package for a few days (via UPS) and it said it was delivered though it was no where to be found, the next day it shows up through USPS in my mailbox. Apparently this is the new thing, to have your FedEx or UPS packages tendered over to the postal service for delivery, I don't like it at all especially when I pay outrageous shipping prices only to have extra time added on to delivery.

I've had the same thing happen with packages from all different kinds of stores, for the most part I don't mind if I'm not paying for shipping or not asked specifically what shipping method I want, but if I'm specifically paying for FedEx, UPS, or expedited delivery I expect it to come that way.

The poster above this said they lived in the country off a private road-if the residence is more than a half mile off the road, the carrier is SUPPOSED to leave a notice for anything too big for the box. This person could very well live that distance, based on their description of their residence. Just wanted to let you know that you may very well have misjudged the 'lazy' letter carrier

As for your other package, unless you were perched at the front door for at least 8 hours, there is possibility that the carrier did indeed knock or ring bell, and you didn't hear it. I mean, we all use the bathroom occasionally, don't we? Why would the carrier not leave it if he/she could? They have to load that package into their truck and UNLOAD it if it's not delivered. It's easier to be able to deliver it-think about it!!

At least it got to your house. Our postal letter carrier often delivers to the wrong street. Right house number, but wrong street!

I had UPS deliver a package and leave it on my front porch at 1:52 in the afternoon per their website. At that time I was sitting in my great room 30 feet from my front door watching the end of my soap. They did not knock or ring the doorbell, I did not leave my seat in the great room, and the TV was not on loud enough to prevent me from hearing a knock or doorbell. Two hours later I received a phone call from a neighbor that they had an empty box addressed to me in their yard. Pottery Barn immediately sent me a replacement, but it is very disconcerting to know that someone walked up on my porch and did that for a pillow and lampshade.

What I am wondering is if the original hands your package off to someone else who then is responsible for paying if something happens to it? The mailman delieverd something to the managers office. They left me a note to let me know this. Well I went to get it and it wasnt there. The next day my husband went to the manager and said you took the package and did not make sure that correct packages are not being taken by someone else. She ended up paying. How ever though I told the mailman I guess I will have to pick up my packages from the post office. Why does the usps carry packages if they wont deliver it to your door? Just aggravating.

My EPIC Mickey was given from UPS to USPS Nov. 28th in MY TOWN...I got it TODAY.

UPS won't be getting my shipping business if this keeps up...I'll just use usps only!

This happened to me on an Amazon Prime shipment as well. I don't think it was handed off BUT when I ordered it said delivered by 12/3 then, the day after it shipped, it said delivered by 12/5. Um....if you say "two day delivery" then it needs to be TWO DAY DELIVERY. I felt sort of like I had been in a bait and switch or something.

Also, I had FedEx deliver a package (also Amazon) and the tracking said it was left at the front door. No it wasn't. It was left on my carport. Which is fine, I'd rather have it there, but it just wasn't the actual location.

Further, Amazon has shipped a movie to me on 12/1 and it still says estimated delivery 12/4. When I try to track it on the usps site it says they have no record of the package. I tried to call usps and got a terrible automated system which also told me no record of the package. When I emailed Amazon they told me to give it until the 13th and in the mean time use the tracking device to see where it might be in shipment WHAT?! I just told them that the online tracking AND the phone tracking didn't have a record

Us, too! They deliver a guy's mail that lives one street over (same house number) and also mail for a couple down the street (same street, same last two digits on the house number but ours begins with a 2 and their's is a one.)

When I got home from work today there were 4 packages at my front door.

There was also a sticker on the door from FedEx that read "FedEx delivered your package."

I never knew that delivery companies were delivering to the post office and then letting USPS make the final delivery. Now that little sticker makes sense to me.

What doesn't make sense is the passing off of the package to the USPS. Doesn't USPS charge the same price from the local post office as it would from the point of origination? Seems like it would cost more to pass it off. But what do I know?
