Upgrading To Concierge

Back in '99 we booked a 3 night stay at the Poly using points. Because standard rooms were full we were upgraded to the concierge level at no additional cost. (TALK ABOUT BEING SPOILED!)

I spoke with DVC this morning and they (Paige) said that upon arrival, if available, there are two things we could do. First, ask if they could upgrade us and second, tell them you would pay (cash) the difference from standard to concierge.

Later, speaking to another DVC rep., they suggested that I contact the Poly and tell them that we want to book our room through the Poly using points and pay the difference in cash and have them (Poly) book our reservation for us by contacting DVC. (Make sense?)

Has anyone else done this?

I have read a few posts that simply say "No Upgrades" but it has happened to us and Paige at DVC said that her parents have had the same thing happen to them.

When I booked my upcoming trip at the Poly using points I also wanted to upgrade to Concierge. Member Services didn't have an answer for me and suggested I call the Poly directly. When I called the Poly directly, they said they couldn't book it before hand and that I should ask about it when I check in.

I leave for WDW in two weeks, so I'll post if I was successful when I get back.

We also had a 3 night stay at Poly on points a couple of years ago. We were thrilled to be upgraded to concierge upon arrival without even requesting it! I'm not sure if the policy regarding upgrades has changed since then but it sure was a wonderful surprise for us. Good luck!

Keep in mind that the DVC reservation is for "run of the house" which means that you'll get the best room available at check-in. In some cases this could mean a concierge. (Of course, it can't hurt to ask if concierge is available when you arrive and even offer to pay the cash difference.)

These "upgrades" certainly would meet the descrition of "best available". Good Luck! :)

We are on points right now inthe GC in DL. The room assigner told me in no uncertain terms that DVC points entitle you to standard rooms only. When I tried to upgrade by calling GC direct they told me MS could do it and MS of course said they cannot do it. I spoke to MS supervisior who said to ask when I went to hotel. I did, and was told of $190 upgrade to concierge per night. I was also told by the room assigner, Barbara that DVC members are told best of house by MS and she has alot of upset point users. She did put us in a view room as we were confirmed this at booking as we booked the first day ressies were taken, and told it was a mistake as point users get the standard rooms and in hotel terms these are usually the least requested. Our standard room overlooked a courtyard and the monorail track was at our door. Cool to look at for a minute until you heard the monorail every few minutes! The GC staff said they need to set MS straight on what they are telling us. The hotel is beautiful, the staff great, but DVC is looked down on in my view and experience. 85% of the rooms here at the GC have some sort of view of the parks or downtown Disney. The view of CA at night is awesome...well worth a few more dollars. The location of this hotel would be worth triple if placed at WDW!!

I'm confused. My guide told us that the rooms for DVC folks at the other resorts (I expressly asked about Poly, GF, Contemp, YB) were NOT the standard rooms, but also not the concierge, but somewhere in the middle. So was my guide incorrect? Why didn't they tell me it's "standard" only?

Is the room itself an up graded room or just amenities. What does concierge include ?

As I noted in a similar thread, it is my understanding based on limited info that the Disney Collection rooms are the standard rooms but that many times the resorts will put us in what ever is available. I know I was told at WL that DVC got the standard rooms and MS seemed to confirm this on two occasions. To get Concierge though, there must be some reason like nothing else available, some type of problem or just a generous CM.

I suspect most of the Disney and other desinations view DVC members as getting something for free or very cheap though we all know that's not the case. It's only one of the reasons that I rent my extra points and pay cash for the other items. I come out better financially and have many more options available to me. The hassle and risk of renting the points is worth it for these reasons alone.
