Upgrading to CL at check in - how does this work?

We are staying at BC for the first time in a long while. We got an amazing deal through a TL for a standard room. I rarely stay CL anywhere (only if i get a free upgrade or my company is paying!) but I was thinking it might be a worthwhile add on if they price wasn't outrageous.

So my question is, if I ask to upgrade for $$, do they just tell me what the price would be if I chose a CL room de novo (so no discount essentially) or do they base the price difference on a certain $ amount above what I'm currently paying.

For example in scenario 1, CL room is $440 a night. No matter what my original discount was, upgrade will now cost me 440 per night
vs
scenario 2 - CL room is 65 per night more than standard. Since my room discount got me a standard room at 200 per night, my CL room (with preserved discount) is 265 per night.

Obviously these are two wildly different prices and I just want to know what to expect, I'll be asking the question on checkin, regardless. TIA

When checking in ask nicely by chance if there is an upgrade to club level and how much. Be clear that you are willing to pay for the upgrade. It will be not be discounted if you got a discount on your package.

I know one year we were at the the WL and they messed my reservations up and they offered me a courtyard view with king bed but handicap shower. I didn't want that as someone might really need it. He then offer me club level for an extra $35 a night. Now this way back in 2003 so prices have gone up. But it was a treat for us as we never stayed club level and now we are hooked lol.

Why don't you call and check on it now? A better chance at getting your discount on the CL room sooner than later, don't you think?

Confused.....

It probably depends on the luck of the draw CM at check-in. You might luck out but might not. If I were you, I'd go excited with your discount and ask. Don't set your heart on getting scenario 2. My fingers are crossed for you though!

I think the OP is going to ask no matter what. The resort normally give them out free. I know a lot on the boards say they get a free upgrade by asking but far between. If they want it they should book it now. Just my view. They said they are willing to pay so why not now ?

If you ask for an upgrade to CL then expect to pay for it without a discount at check in if it is even available to upgrade to it. If you want the discount on it you need to do that now and if it is not available with your discount decide if you wan to pay rack rate for it and do that ahead of time if you definitely want it.

They do not apply discounts to rooms upgraded for a fee at check in- basically all they do is apply the money you have already paid to the room at rack rate. I am guessing you will be looking at close to $600/ night for a CL room at the Beach Club with no discounts.

I know some hotel chains have a standby upgrade fee, where for a flat rate you can get an upgraded room at check in if its available. Unfortunately Disney does not work that way.

There is no "upgrade fee". Just a separate rate for standard and CL. If you want to upgrade to CL, they will adjust your rate to the CL rate, and you will get credit for any $$ you already paid for your original room. You'll simply owe the difference. Which will probably be a lot, lol!

If you really want CL, your best bet is to try to get a discount, which generally means booking it in advance. By the time you check in, the discount for that time frame may have expired or be booked up already. There is no scenario that would have upgrading at check in be cheaper.

We asked to do the same thing at check in. They flat out said no. We traveled with a deal threw an agency. They said nope, and wouldn't even give me a price? I asked if I could just do the math, she told me to "believe her???" And said no. I would have like to make my own choice but oh well.

It will be the difference of what you paid. If you didn't book through Disney direct it is extremely possible they will say no because the system won't show what you paid. You can call your TA and ask what the upgrade cost would be now. The CM may be able to do something when you get there but usually if you aren't getting a free upgrade (we've only ever gotten those for view changes not up to CL) they may not be able to process another upgrade.

Some Agency deals are not eligible for an upgrade so it's possible the CM was correct.

Like convention/group rates, those deals often come with firm restrictions. On the plus side, they frequently have great prices.

Exactly.

OP I see you didn't mention your travel dates. If it is during Food and Wine forget about even thinking about moving, even paying for it. During that time of year it is almost impossible to get into Beach, Yacht, or Boardwalk unless there is a cancellation or no show.

OP--if you booked with the agency that I think you booked with, they also have rates for BC CL. Their rates will be much less than if you try to upgrade at the front desk. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the replies. We are going the week after labor day, so before F&W and essentially the lowest week of the year. I just sent an email to the TA to see what rates she could get. Like I said, the rate we got was FABULOUS - even better than the rate we could have gotten with out 40% off military discount.

I don't have my heart set on CL, so worst case scenerio, the upgrade cost is prohibitive and I just stick with standard and spend that extra money on restaurants and cocktails. :drinking1

The last part of September will be higher due to F&W festival. Prices goes up.

So, as a follow up - EEEEEK! TA quote for CL is $5000 more for the week. I'll still ask at check in, but for 5 grand, I can pay some guys to pop grapes in my mouth while fanning me all week! LOL

If you got that quote from your TA asking at front desk won't be any cheaper. Unless you are asking for a free upgrade but don't count on it.
