upgrading PHP to AP's

I am going over everything fr a budget for a (hopeful) trip in Feb. Hubby doesn't want to get sucked into AP's because we ended up doing 3 trips last time! LOL

So I was thinking I'd just get passes for now and then upgrade to APs if we decide to go that route.

How does that work? This is of course based on that they have not been used yet. So lets say a 6 day pass.

If I buy the passes at the Disney Store could I exchange them there or would I have to wait until I get to Disney?
