Upgrading from Premium AP to Premier AP

Hoping that someone might be able to help me out with a decision. I currently have a Premier AP that is coming up for renewal this month. I'll be visiting Disneyland twice this fall and WDW twice early next year so I will eventually need the Premier AP again.

There is no benefit to renewing my current Premier AP before I get to Disneyland at the end of August because there is no discount renew a Premier AP. If I renew just the Disneyland AP portion (as a Disneyland Premium AP), I get a $60 discount.

I know if I downgrade to the Disneyland only AP now, I can upgrade to a Premiere Pass in January when I head to WDW.

I have two questions:

1. When I upgrade to the Premiere pass at WDW in January do they calculate the difference I owe by subtracting the normal Disneyland AP price or by subtracting my discounted AP price. (in others words, is the discount useless)

2. Since I will be only be using the WDW portion of the premiere pass for half a year, is the cost pro rated when I upgrade at WDW in January? (I don't believe it is but that would seal the deal if it was)

Any advice would be appreciated!

1. They use the price you paid. So, essentially the discount is useless; however, it is basically the same as splitting the price of the Premiere into 2 payments:)

2. No pro-rate. You will be charged the full price.

That's what I thought...Thanks

We had the Premier pass one year simply because of the timing of our WDW and DL trips. The following year it didn't make sense for us because our DL trips were going to be "too far" into the future to get our money's worth. Instead we just got a regular WDW AP and once we did go to DL (about 6 months later) we bought the DL AP.

That worked well for us in two ways -
  1. We got the special DVC deal for the WDW AP and didn't have to essentially give it back to buy a Premier AP
  2. Our DL AP ran long enough to include another west coast trip during its year

So instead of upgrading your Disneyland AP to a Premier you just bought separate full year AP's for WDW and DL each with different expiration dates? I didn't even think about that but it might be worth doing the math. Thanks for the tip!

I'm toying with a similar situation. I have a DL Deluxe AP expiring June 2015 and my DVC WDW Premium AP expiring early August.

I'm going to WDW just after my pass expires so my debate is whether to get the Premier of simply renew my current AP... The cost differential is pretty close to negligible...
