Upgrading FL Resident AP?

We currently have Weekday APs, which worked with our budget back in August, and we like to go after work and enjoy the evenings at the parks.
The new park hours wouldn't allow us to go after work. Additionally, with not having been for months, I'm now eager to go, even during the hot and wet summer months.

Therefore, we are looking at the option to upgrade our Weekday APs to a Theme Park Select pass (gives us the option to go in July/beginning August and during weekends).
I'm currently temporarily in Europe, so I can't just pick up the phone and ask Disney.

How does an upgrade work?
Do I pay part of the upgrade rate ($70), or do I pay the full amount while the August expiration date stays the same? (Yes, I'm ignoring the extension due to Covid-19 closures)

There are no options to upgrade the passes now. Once they reopen selling tickets you can upgrade but need to pay the difference for the entire year of your pass not just ther current mouths that you'll use it

At this point, I would just take the refund for the closure and then get the new pass when the old one expires (not sure if there's a renewal discount for these passes)

Yes, there is a renewal discount for them. That's not a bad idea; it would require me to be a bit more patient with going back, but then we'll have a better understanding of the 'new' WDW as well.
