upgrading already purchased annual passes??

my girlfriend and I are currently Epcot after 4 passholders and were thinking of upgrading to the FL resident seasonal pass.
My question is can passholders upgrade to better passes once already purchased? and if so, do you just pay the difference?

Note though the expiration is the date of your old one. So if you upgrade 3 months prior to your original renewal, the new upgraded pass still expires in 3 months.

Yes.
We are upgrading from Premium DL annual passes to Premier to come to WDW.
Thank goodness they let you pay the pro-rated price now!
