Upgrading 10 day Base Tickets

I'm trying to work out the best deal for my family. At present we have a cast member discount room at CBR (friends are cast members) and we could add the DDP and buy annual passes or we could cancel that booking and go for a new package with a 10 day base tkt and free dining. I would need to upgrade the 10 day base tkt for an annual pass and we'd be doing this the second week of December, when the parks will be busy. Has anyone got experience of upgrading the base tkts you buy with the free DDP? If so was it an easy process and is the cost to upgrade consistent or is it pot luck on the day.

If I've done the math properly I think it would be approx $576 cheaper to change to a package with free dining and upgrade our passes to AP., unless a better cast member discount becomes available nearer the time. I'm just a little apprehensive about upgrading the passes. Any advice would be most appreciated.

We upgraded our free dining tickets to annual passes last fall. There weren't any issues per we, but it took almost an hour because the cast member had issues with the IT system. Just be prepared to possibly wait and otherwise you should be fine.

Know your price going in. The cost of AP (with tax) is $675.21 and a 10-day base ticket is $377.01, so you'll owe the difference of $298.20. Your upgrade is straightforward with no price bridging required as the tickets weren't purchased at a discount.

I got my first AP in '07 the same way. I had a package (8-day ticket) with free dining and had no trouble upgrading that ticket to an AP.

Great info, thank you. Would I be able to upgrade say at DTD before we use the tickets as there's no price bridging involved? Thanks again

Tickets purchased with a package are not considered "direct" from Disney for price bridging, so you would still be better off to use the tickets once before upgrading.

That's not precisely true in the case of tickets purchased as part of a WDW Resort Package.

Tickets purchased with a package are not considered "direct" from Disney for price bridging, so you would still be better off to use the tickets once before upgrading.

It can't HURT and, in some cases, it can HELP.

Thanks everyone. I've decided to stick with the discounted room. I've booked annual passes and added the DDP to my booking and I seemed to get a good price so I'm happy. It seemed easier this but many thanks for all your help
