Upgrades. How do you ask?

Okay, I guess I was just taught to take what you are given, but after reading this board for a while I see that we may be missing a perk.

How do you ask for an upgrade? I mean, I can say the words, but how do you phrase it so you do not sound dumb?

Is there any upgrades available? If they quote you a price and it is ok then say I'll take it. If you don't want to pay just say you will keep what you have. If they smile and offer you something for free thank them.

I always book what I "should" get (like a standard view room at the Boardwalk) and when I get there I'll ask if they have anything better (but *only* if I'm willing to pay the difference - If I'm not willing to pay for the *full* difference, I leave the possibility for someone else.) Around half the time they'll do it for free, a third for a reduced rate, and the remaining 1/6 they'll ask for the full amount - if they have a room to upgrade me to in the first place.

Ask politely and be willing to pay for it and you should get something.

Oh, and at Disney, telling them it's your Birthday/Anniversary/Honeymoon//etc may get you a congratulations but don't expect an upgrade.

I don't. That way if it happens, it's a treat - and some Disney magic.

We recently returned from WL and it was the first time I have not faxed a request letter before my arrival. Although I didn't do anything, we were upgraded free of charge from woods view to courtyard! It was heavenly! I had actually tried to book a courtyard view on a code when I made the reservation, but woods view was all that was available, so that is what we (reluctantly) took. I felt like Tinkerbell had heard my wishes!
