Has anyone ever had their room upgraded at a DVC resort when staying on points? i.e. you booked a studio & when you get there they tell you that you are now in a 1 bedroom.
Just curious.

Thanks Lisa

Never got upgraded to larger accomodations, but I did get "upgraded" from standard 1BR to perferred 1 BR last trip. (mentioned this in another post if this sounds familiar to anyone). I put upgraded in quotes, because the room I got was 3/4 parking lot view, 1/4 canal/MGM Studios view. I have had standard rooms that were better (ie view of Epcot fireworks and front of BWV).

I think the room they "upgraded" me to was one that anyone using more points for perferred would have not been happy with. So yeah I was upgraded, but what a disappointing upgrade! In 20 trips I never was upgraded and I felt so happy, only to see the view and become very disappointed. Didn't complain though, as I had expected standard anyway. :confused3

Nope. I did get upgraded from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom at VWL last September, but it was a cash stay - I was trying out the DVC properties before I bought! A 2 bedroom is very roomy for just 1 person!!!!

We were upgraded from a studio to a 1 BR at BWV before we were members so that was a cash stay too.

I did in Oct. 2003. Dh and I booked a studio at BWV.with a standard veiw. We booked in sept couldnt believe we even got a studio at BWV in such short notice we were excited because it was our first time at that resort and we were coming to go to the food and wine festival only. When we checked in the CM said you have an upgrade I was so excited I asked what kind he smiled and said better view ( my DH jokingly said we probably got moved from a parking lot view to a valet parking lot view). Anyhoo our room wasnt ready so we went to Epcot, when we finally got to the room we walked in (keep in mind we have never been in a studio) I looked around and said to my DH These studios are really nice, we then realized it was a one bedroom I couldnt believe it we'll probably never get upgraded again but it was a great suprise and we really appreciated it.

I've never been upgraded. They do happen, but they are extremely rare for point stays. Usually it is because the reserved room type is out of service for maintenence.

All the gods have to agree, and all the planets have to be in line, and some type of problems must occur at the resort regarding rooms for you to get a upgrade when on points. I believe it is not even allowed unless it is a dire emergency. Unlike other resorts where this can happen regularly not at DVC. I don't consider the type of view an upgrade like they give out at BWV.

My DH got upgraded once, though it was a cash room--from a studio to a one bedroom, and it was for only one night, since we were reserved on points the next night. He was alone, though, and had to check out of the room the next day, and then turn around and check back in to the room for the rest of our stay. It was the same room that they had forced DH to vacate earlier in the day! :rotfl:

TR Denise...Did you book points or Cash though??

I have only heard of upgrades with points happening in very RARE instances and always because of something going wrong with the room.

edited (oops wrote cash instead of points duh)

Good one! :rotfl: But at least you got clean sheets and a clean bathroom for his inconvenience!

It was on points they really never told us why and of course we didnt ask. We had a rough Sept. and we were just glad to be away that was a great bonus

It is a very rare occurrance and probably may never happen in some members' lifetime. I have heard of it happening the most at BWV probably because of all the construction going on. When I say most, it was 2 to 3 times over reading 6 years of posts. More likely to happen to those staying on cash or only for 1 or 2 nights.

That being said, it happened to one of my aunts. I have a fellow DVCer aunt who gave her sister 1 or 2 nights at the VWL before her sister and family went on the cruise. They are a family of 6, so DVC aunt booked 2 studios for her sister and her family. They came home to tell us that VWL upgraded both their studio to 1-bedrooms!!! :cheer2: Wow! I think they mentioned something about being overbooked? Not sure how that would have happened except cash overbooking or maintenance problems pulling some rooms out of commission. They probably got the upgrade due to the fact they were staying for such a short trip.

DVC aunt and I were glad that other aunt got to experience a 1-bedroom, but hey, why didn't WE get the upgrade when we stay there? Since we had to actually pay for the points and the maintenance! Ha!

Aunt that went on the cruise had one complaint. She brought tickets to the park for the one day they were at WDW. Her kids loved the room so much they didn't want to leave the room much less go to the parks. The farthest they would go was the pool. If she had known, she would have saved her money and skipped the park tickets!

It's something DVC consciously doesn't do unless there's a reason. Acceptable reasons would include your room was out of commission or there were a specific problem deserving of a comp item. Otherwise, they should and would let the larger/better units go empty rather than upgrade members.

Wow, Thanks for all the responses. :wave2:

Wow....you really lucked out then;) Very cool:)

We got one at VWL. We had spent our trip at AKL on points and changed to VWL for the last night. They upgraded us from studio to 1BR, which was a huge blessing. Got to do laundry, spread out for one day, relax, after being cooped up in a regular ol' hotel room for most of the week.

We didn't find out why- just figgered it was that Disney Magic.
