First, a little background, then I'll get to the crazy part at the end.
Our school district has been a mess for the past few years, and it's only set to get worse over the next several years. I have been trying to convince DS12 to switch to another local school district that comes into town and picks up students that have chosen to "evacuate" out of our school district to theirs, as most school districts around here have open enrollment.
DS hasn't been interested, because he doesn't want to leave his friends behind. Now, as the school year is approaching, he has begun to talk about all the changes (several schools are closing and they're cramming most of them into his school, year after year. 200 more students added this year.), and he's finally beginning to realize how things will continue to go downhill within the district through his senior year.
On Friday evening, he learned that his closest friend has just decided to transfer to the other school with his brother, so DS decided to finally take a look at it. We researched everything we could on the website and the school really looks great! It seems almost like our local college prep school, which is a very expensive private school. One of my brothers graduated from this school (and loved it) and the other one graduated from the private school (apparently after I went to the school in our district, my parents decided not to send either of my brothers there...
)
So he made the decision that he wants to transfer to this school! For the first time in a very long time, I am really excited about his education! It's a small K-12 school outside of town, with only about 30 students in each graduating class, but they have so many more opportunities! Until we researched the website this weekend, I had no idea just how much more this school did for their students! I have talked with several people now who have either attended or known someone who has, and I haven't heard anything bad about it yet!
Ok, here's the crazy part, as promised. As I said, he decided this on Friday night. His current school was to start on Thursday (they are starting late this year due to construction/remodeling on several of the schools), and this new school starts TOMORROW!
Of course they weren't open today, so we're just going to show up in the morning and hope they don't have a waiting list and they will still take him. His friend that also made this decision, will be doing the same thing.
We went school supply shopping (again) after getting their supply list, and I found it very interesting that we had to buy very few things we didn't already have, but I now will be returning about half of the stuff we bought for the list from the other school!
We actually have no idea if we will be able to get them in or not, as we had heard there were now waiting lists in all the surrounding schools due to parents taking their kids out of this messed up school district. But the mom of DS's friend had a conversation with the principal that led her to believe there is NOT a waiting list. (oh please, let this be true!)
Anyway, if you have read this far, we could really use some good thoughts and pixiedust. We really, really want this to work out!!!
