Let’s take a step back and focus more on Earned Points

Some CC companies offer discounted gift cards, is this recommended?

And what is the best way to use earned points, are they transferable and do they expire?

I'm honestly not totally sure I understand the first question - so I'll give a couple of responses. If you're talking about things like Chase offers and Amex offers where you save 10% at a store and can buy a gift card - those are great! If you're talking about redeeming points for gift cards, that can be a crapshoot. Sometimes a good deal, often not a good deal. But sometimes it is your only option. Also, if you sign-up for the card with that redemption option in mind and it is an acceptable value to you, then it can make sense!

The best way to use earned points is virtually impossible to answer. Some people use American Express Membership Rewards (MRs) points to fly internationally in first class in a cabin that has a shower and a bed. Others redeem them for 1.25cpp for cash via a Schwab account. Still others redeem them for Home Depot gift cards and buy a washing machine. All three are perfectly viable uses for those points.

There are flexible currencies out there. These would include URs, MRs, Citi Thank You Points (TYP). These often have a huge variety of options. They can even be transferred to travel partners which can further enhance their value. It's important to do your research and understand all of the options. TYP can be used for Disney tickets as an example... but I wouldn't use them for that because I have a different use for them.

And then there are more company specific currencies. Airline miles, hotel miles, etc. and these are often best used for that specific purpose. I earn SW points to fly on Southwest (as an example).

And of course lastly there are cash offers which are the easiest to understand but sometimes not the most lucrative.

Each program has its own expiration policy. Many points do not expire - this is a trend in the industry right now. This often involves another spreadsheet where you monitor how many points you have and what their expiration is.

Moving forward.
Q. Is it necessary or recommended to have an Airline credit card? How will it save me money? Can’t I get the same deal if I join an airline’s free membership/club?

If you are planning to fly a certain airline frequently, you should ALWAYS join the frequent flyer program. It is a no-brainer! It costs you nothing. You should enroll, your spouse should enroll, your kids should enroll, heck - your dog should enroll...

Wait a minute... don't enroll your dog, not a good plan! (a little grAAvy humor for my CC peeps)

Each of the airline's cards (Southwest, Delta, American, JetBlue, United, etc.) offer special benefits for having their cards. Priority boarding, fee credits, free bags, free in-flight entertainment, and so on. The benefits vary but they can be great! BUT almost every airline card I know of has an annual fee (AF). That can be a downside for folks. Most of these AFs are well worth the price of admission if you fly a lot though!

It also makes sense to earn miles/points from the airline you plan to fly the most. While you can transfer Chase URs to fly SW, and you can use Chase URs to book flights on SW... your best plan is to earn SW points with a SW card to fly SW. Sense the theme here??

Earning Butt-In-Seat miles/points with major airlines is HARD work. You have to fly A TON to earn just one free flight. The airline's branded credit card is like a super-charged shortcut to free flights. I haven't paid for a SW flight in years but I've flown them dozens of times free thanks to their credit card partnership with Chase!

Last question,

Q. Is there a limit on how many credit cards you can apply for?
Well my wife and I are at 95... so you tell me?? 😂 😂 😂

I will say that we often discuss PACING on our thread. It is very important that you pace yourself, if you run too fast, you will be denied for cards or ::GASP:: worse - shutdown!

Recommended reading here would be my Fireside Chat on Pacing: https://www.disboards.com/threads/i...t-page-for-addl-details.3729982/post-61161429

When somebody is new to the game, the desire is often to grab ALL OF THE CARDS!! They see others going on extravagant FREE trips and there is a bit of "card envy". The problem with the credit card churning game is there's no way to jump to the front of the line. You often have to put in the work. It's important to start earning for a domestic trip 12-15 months in advance and international trips you want to be 18-24 months in advance. This gives you time to earn enough points! Cashback is a different story since it posts immediately and is available for use quickly.

And since a new person wants "all of the cards" they have to be selective with their applications. Because you can't simply get all of the cards in a short time frame.

There's a lot of talk about Google Pay which recently relaunched their app as GPay.
If you have the old version, update your device to save big!

GC Galore recently posted this article 'Google Pay Card-Linked Deals: 13+ Great Stacking Opportunities' showcasing a few great deals like these;
$21 back when spending $50 at Target. - Works on Disney Gift Cards!
20% cashback at REI on up to $250 of spend.

He describes How to Use the App with step by step instructions, offers tips and suggestions and includes what credit cards work, how to save even more when using credit card offers and cashback sites. It's an excellent read, easy to understand and to top it all off, he provides examples/images of what you need to look for.

Doctor of Credit posted his own article as well 'Google Pay is the latest app in the world of Deals Stacking' He even included a link to all the deals he's posted and you can find them here.

Going forward, GPay App deals like all other apps will be posted in the MISC. section on a daily basis when available. I've also included a link to GC Galore How To on Post #6 Cashback (CB) Portals Discounted Gift Card Websites & Apps

SouthFayetteFan, I think most people here are looking for a few tips to save money on a Disney trip but are not interested in spending 18 hours a day keeping track of 95 credit cards. There are plenty of other blogs out there which are totally devoted to the manufactured spending game and people who spend every waking hour doing that. People here just want a few tips on how to save money on Dsiney trips and Dinsey gift cards that can be done in a minute or 2. Like an Amex offer. Or a sale at BJ's on Disney gift cards.
