UPDATE: To vaccinate after a reaction?

That's a hard call OP. I tend to think I would get the vaccine anyway because the diseases themselves seem to be making a come-back and your kid will be in school with so many un-vaccinated kids that coming in contact with these illness is getting more and more likely. That said if it were me I would probably do a bit of digging and possibly wait to get the vaccines separately. Unless something changes or has changed, Merck is supposed to come out with three separate vaccines instead of the combined one next year, 2011. If for some reason the Merck thing were to fall through i would go with the MMR instead of abstaining from the shots. To each their own but my kids are all up to date because the statistics on the diseases themselves worry me much more than the vaccine.

She has to get the booster next week and I'm wondering if I should continue on with the vaccine even though she had this reaction.

MY DD had a bad reaction too, fever of 105 and horrible rash. We decided not to revaccinate before kindy based on pedi's recommendation. He said most of the kids who have a bad reaction actually do so because they are developing an extra-strong immunity.

I do respect your opinion, but IMHO, that would be overkill. VAERS is for adverse reactions. Running a temp after an MMR vaccination is not all that uncommon. Even that high of a temp. Believe me, I have seen temps in office over 105.0. Not necessarily from immunizations, just illnesses in general. A temp that can freak a parent out, and what actually worries me as a health care worker, are two different temps.

So would I vaccinate, most likely yes!! I would speak with my ped about my concerns, and see what their opinion is. Together, we would make a decision.

And no, MMR can not be broken into 3 different vaccines. At this time, it is not being manufactured.

I agree.. And if I remember correctly (it was a long, long time ago), my kids always had some sort of reaction after having any kind of vaccine.. The ped warned me ahead of time, so I wouldn't worry when it actually happened..

OP - trust your gut and speak with the Pediatrician. If you aren't comfortable with their answer then get a second opinion.

My oldest DD had a reaction to her 1st DTP vaccine which landed her in the ER as a very young infant. After that she received DT only until years later when the DTaP was manufactured and she had 1 dose of that. She is not fully vaccinated against Pertussis and I cringe whenever I hear of a Pertussis outbreak.

I consider a fever normal, I guess. The vaccines seem to be better as the kids get older.

A bad reaction means hospitalization to me. My oldest (19 now) had a reaction to the pertussus, so she gets the DT.

She recently went to China and got the Typhoid shot without any reaction.

If you plan on doing any traveling later, immunizations are something to think about taking care of, just as a thought. My kids want to travel.

to the Op., trust yourself always when it comes to vaccinations, or any other care for you child. If you feel like this is not the right thing to do right now, then don't do it. I am a pediatric nurse, and have taken care of a 15 year old boy who is permanently paralyzed because of a bad reaction to a vaccination. Adverse reactions do happen, although in a very small percentage of children. But I wouldn't let peer, or school pressure push you into doing something you are not comfortable with. Please discuss these concerns with your pediatrician.

My middle son cannot get another MMR vaccine after the reaction he had after the initial vaccination.

He has a MD note exempting him from the vaccine for medical reasons and that has been good for the schools.

His reaction did not include a rash/fever, but was a neurological reaction to the shot that scared the heck out of everyone including the doc's. Thankfully, he is okay today.

Ok, so the receptionist called today to confirm our appointment for next week and actually said the dr wants to us a half hour earlier (so now I have to pull DD from school) and then I said, actually I'd like to talk with the dr. about the vaccine. She said "yes that is why u are coming, to get vaccinated." and I said "No I'd like to speak with her about it" (meaning like now or at some point today or tomorrow) she said yes you can talk to her (or him, not sure which dr I will get, 2 are there) about it when you get here and said bye.
ugh seriously, I think I am going to call back tomorrow OR go there in person (I have forms for the dr to fill out about epipen use in school) and see if I could at least post pone this a little bit more so I could think about it more and get a note.

Sometimes it just irks me though, as I said before, not against vaccines, but I shouldn't be required by law to put something into my kid's body that is going to make her sick.

You are NOT required to vaccinate, there are exemptions. The reaction your DD had was pretty normal though.

Have the blood test for titers done. This way no shot of vaccine if your child is immune and the school is satisfied. It is a simple blood test.

We've done titers for my kids after DD got desperately sick after H1N1 and my DH and I have both had them done to check if we needed childhood disease boosters so from experience I can tell you it's a simple blood test.

She doesn't HAVE to get the booster next week, I'm assuming you mean that per your state's vacc schedule she's due for it and her yearly appointment is next week.

Hold off on it for now. Talk to the doc while you're there. Discuss the possibility of the 3 vaccs being done separately, or perhaps them doing a titer check for her immunity (which might mean she won't need the booster at all).

My DD had a reaction to her first DPT. It was horrible, screaming, fever, leg was swollen and hot. I told the Dr, she hasn't had a reaction since. I think they changed it to a DTaP, or something like that. Maybe you Dr has something like that they can do. I would check with the Dr before I made a decision on my own.

All of my kids got the rash & 104.1-104.6 fever & we still chose to Booster. The fever/rash really isn't that big of a deal.

My daughter had fever of 103 after her second series and I never had her vaccinated again and I won't. She's 16 and her ped asked about the gardisil shot I told him "No and don't ask again."

All I can say is go with your gut. You can always give it to her in the future but you can't take it back once it is in there.

Honestly that is the decision between YOU and your dr.

But if she were my child I would probably go ahead with the immunization.

My son had a fever of 105.4 after receiving his shots plus a flu shot about 18 months ago.....I was so scared. Since he received a total of 3 shots that day we do not know which one caused the high fever. Since then I only allow the Dr. to give him 1 shot at a time in case of a reaction. I put of the MMR until he was 3...and luckily he only had a fever of 102.6...for about 48 hours. He did not have the flu shot last year...and now I am debating it again this year because we will be on a cruise in November. My DD has received the flu shot the past 4 years and has never had a reaction....but DS is much more sensitive to injections. It's a hard call...as we all want the best for our children.
