UPDATE pg 11, post 155, CONAN is COMING TO TBS!!

Are you an NBC exec? Just kidding.;)
Hehe, no. I just don't think it is ever good to say someone is not doing something right, or that they don't understand something, just because they're not doing what we might want them to do.

So it sounds like the most likely replacement for Leno are:

- Burn off drama series that they've canceled or are planning to cancel.
- Reality/competition series.
- Bring Law & Order: Criminal Intent back from USA, or really any USA series.
- Rush something into production before it is ready.
- Add more hours of Dateline.

NBC's Jeff Gaspin indicated we can expect two hours of scripted drama, max.

I wouldn't mind if they rushed In Plain Sight, back into production and moved & airred the new episodes. That's a great show. :thumbsup2 I love Mary McCormack. USA has short, half seasons for their shows. :(

Do you think they would move Jay to a daytime slot like Ellen?

I think it's unlikely. The show was barely working with all the skits and stuff Leno had to do to tone down the show to make it Primetime, family oriented. He'd be better off moving to FOX, or NBC moving him to the USA Network at 11:30.

More importantly, Jay has a lot of bargaining clout with the nighttime audience. Those are his demographics. The very fans who may make the switch with him over to another network,

are probably the same ones who are at work during daytime TV.

Also, stars just aren't going to show up for him during daytime as they do for nighttime TV. Do you think he would have gotten Hugh Grant onto a daytime show after Grant was caught with a hooker? Do you think Kanye would have shown up after his Taylor Swift running off at the mouth? Jay was the one who almost made Kanye cry by asking how his mother would have reacted. That man has Hollywood clout & respect. :thumbsup2 It's a BIG bargaining chip for him.

However, only a small portion of the NBC audience has seen the show -- the most logical approach, I think would be to start it from the beginning.

At this point, the only possibilities that folks are giving much credence to are either (A) Jay at 11:35, with Conan at 12:05 and Fallon at 1:05; or (B) Jay at 11:35, with Fallon at 12:35, and Conan walking away (perhaps to Fox).

If they totally bump Conan to make way for Jay I'll follow Conan to whatever station he lands on.
1 because I really like Conan and 2 it's a sleezy thing for NBC to do to him so I'll 'vote' with my remote.

I think that is one of the problems that NBC is addressing with this change: Conan's ratings have been much worse than Leno's ratings were. This whole production (as indicated in the New York Times article I quote) was at least in part inspired by the worry that NBC would lose Conan to another network, but given Conan's poor ratings, perhaps NBC realizes, now, that that's just not as big of a worry as it was back in 2004.

They said on the new this morning it was Conan that was leaving.

What a mess NBC is in.

I'm so happy I watch Letterman :thumbsup2

I think it is unfair to compare Jay Leno's viewership and Conan's viewership. Leno had the benefit of hit t.v. shows as his lead in. Conan(no offense to Leno) has a two bit variety show as a lead in. So, of course the nightly news and Conan's show will take a hit in viewership numbers because of this. If Leno's lead in had been a forth place show for all of those years, his numbers would not have been near what they were. Give Conan hit shows like E.R. and Law and Order as his lead in, and his viewership numbers would definitely be much improved. NBC is clueless lately on programming decisions.

The same can be said about Conan. His lead in was the #1 late night show. Which was an even stronger than lead-in than the Nightly News that Leno had.

Without Leno to feed viewers in to his Late Night show, Conan flopped big time. Not only was he unable to bring his Late Night viewers with him to the Tonight show, he also lost about half of the Tonight show viewership.

Actually, if that's the case, then that's great news for NBC. It makes it possible for this past year to just be a footnote, in the end.

So far, no official word from NBC or O'Brien.

Both Letterman and Craig F. are staying put until 2012 at least (although I would love to see Craig in an earlier time slot) and no Leno at 10:00... it's like a belated Christmas gift for me.

Last official word is that all three hosts (Leno, O'Brien, and Fallon) were being "professional" about the situation, and that, at least so far, they're all staying with NBC. You can be sure that as soon as there is any official word varying from that (if ever), someone will post a link to it here.

How are Jimmy Fallon's ratings, do you know? I didn't realize that Conan was doing so poorly.

Jerry Seinfeld weighs in on all this....

Jerry Seinfeld Defends NBC's Shakeup of Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien

By SHEILA MARIKAR, DAVID ALPERT and BRIAN ROONEY
Jan. 11, 2010

At least one prominent comic is defending NBC's controversial shakeup of its late-night stars, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon: Jerry Seinfeld.

Seinfeld, whose iconic sitcom aired on the network during the '90s and '00s, praised NBC's vision in moving Leno to prime time, even if the gamble didn't quite work out as planned.

"This was the right idea at the wrong time," Seinfeld said while promoting his new reality show, "The Marriage Ref," in Los Angeles on Sunday. "I'm proud that NBC had the guts to try something."

Seinfeld also said O'Brien, who would be bumped from his current time slot at 11:35 p.m. ET, will emerge from the wreckage unscathed.

"What did the network do to him?" Seinfeld asked. "I don't think anyone's preventing people from watching Conan. Once they give you the cameras, it's on you. I can't blame NBC for having to move things around. I hope Conan stays, I think he's terrific. But there's no rules in show business, there's no refs."

It remains to be seen if O'Brien will stay with the network that made him a star of if he'll fly the coop. He could potentially move his schtick to a competing network or leave the late-night game altogether. According to The Wall Street Journal, O'Brien is exploring his options with Fox.

The 4th quarter numbers are out: Ferguson is beating Fallon, 1.4/05 vs. 1.0/04. By comparison, this time last year, it was 1.4/05 vs. 1.5/05, with O'Brien instead of Fallon, of course. So it isn't so much that Ferguson is doing that much better, but just that Fallon is doing that much worse.

O'Brien is doing even worse than Fallon. Letterman is beating O'Brien, 3.0/08 vs. 1.8/05. Again, that is a reversal from last year, 2.8/07 vs. 3.5/09, with Leno instead of O'Brien.
