Veteran of five wrist surgeries here.
It sure sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome. When I had the CT surgery, my doctor did a quick test (we'd done most of the surgeries for other stuff at this point and I'd given him my opinion)...he cupped his hand around my arm just below the elbow and applied gentle pressure. Within 10 seconds, my pinkie was numb, 30 seconds the next finger was numb.
I had the surgery, but I now use a CMC restriction splint. It's a neoprene glove that allows movement, but supports the thumb. I still have "spaz hands", but that's inevitable with so many surgeries. At least they don't hurt on a daily basis. Like everyone else has said, definitely follow up on this with the doctor. While it sure sounds like CTS, it could be something more serious.
Try to cut back on those repetitive tasks, like typing ...I'd tell Monty he has to start typing his own thoughts for the day, that you need to cut back on the typing. (BTW, I end up lurking far more than posting due to the CTS)
